For the novels: The Ciaphas Cain or Gaunt's Ghosts series are probably the most readable and easiest to get into. The Gaunt series is basically Sharpe in neofascist Catholic space opera. Ciaphas Cain is more of a dark-humored take on the absurdity of all of it.

I'm gonna be really frank with you.
I got into 40K in 2003 when I was 12 because obviously that's something a 12 year old would think is fucking cool. I've never not loved it since, and love it for different reasons - some serious, some because it's a humorous universe.
Over the years, though, I have found that the real world has so many fucking loonies and crazies and absolute fucking degenerates that it makes me take a look at the Imperium of Man in the lore and think, 'even with all its corruption, it's sloth, it's absolute waste of men and resources, and the fucking ridiculousness of an IP created in the 80's that was meant to be over the top, I STILL find it to make more sense than the real world'.
Political ideologies are largely full of bullshit. But the Emperor... The Emperor only asks that I serve and kill in his name, and honestly, that simple style of a life is something I can fucking get behind.
