Most American houses are big and have rooms that are hardwood or tile. Why not just wipe my shoes on a rug and god forbid wash them every now and then, take them off outside my bedroom? I have to run outside to do things anyway. Im not poor and can afford a vacuum and carpet shampooer.

I hate walking on carpeted floors in outdoor footwear.
I'm happy walking in the porch, utility room, kitchen etc which all tend to be tiled or lino, as long as the footwear isn't like workboots dripping or encrusted in dirt (they come off outside or in garage).
The problem is a lot of homes in bongistan don't have a porch or utility room, it's straight from the front door into a carpeted hallway, and I always feel awkward standing on the doormat preparing to take my shoes off, and the host is like "don't worry you can keep them on".
