Provoking critical thought, and asking questions important to society are the most apparent contributions. I don't see any grander purpose of art of the kind that is displayed in, for example. museums (such as the art in OP's picture), but art can also be used as propaganda alongside aesthetics. For me, art (as vaguely defined by OP) doesn't have to be more important or sophisticated than any other form of entertainment, it's just something that I enjoy.

Art's just a reflection of prevailing attitudes, so while it contributes to the culture, at most it just clarifies or highlights existing things.

I don't think it has much of an effect on deciding on direction.

Wrong, just because you dislike something doesn't make it worse. In order to appreciate alot of contemporary art, you need more knowledge in artistic theory. The only reason that most people drag on modern art is because it's trying to outdo itself, which is what it should. Art will eventually have a renaissance, where classic art will rebecome the zeitgeist. According to Nietzche, art is the only vertue that mankind justifies its existence.

That's a tough one. I mean, we could totally do without visual design and live in cubes whilst eating liquid mush, but ultimately when the whole of humanity is a failure and all good things come to an end I find art just about the only uplifting thing left. And no, not just realism, romanticism, or pure aestheticsm, but the whole of art, because if you're not thick enough to miss it, the point is in the representation of human will and drive. Have you ever asked where the imagination comes from? The question gets more complicated the more you delve into personal creativity, I find, and art is somewhat of the key to understanding ourselves. However, it would seem that some don't value introspection and would much prefer to see and understand than to see and think

If you want to critisize something as vast as fucking modern art, and say all of it is a fucking hack, you need to absolutely 100% know what you're talking about. you need to have done years of studying in art theory and fundamentals to grasp what the fuck you're talking about. It's like if i say all modern music since the 1990s is ass. if i say that, i need to be a fucking music genius or else my opinion is worth less that the fucking hair in my asscrack.
