he's probably right in a broad sense but it ultimately comes down to how much you value perfect health and longevity vs performance and aesthetics. It's probably a good idea for people with bad genes, pre-existing conditions, and gear users to go plant based, cholesterol/sat fat elimination at least on a cyclical basis.

Beans are terrible for most people, grains are ok in moderation but the main source of calories should be starchy tubers like sweet potatos and normal potatos loaded with all the nutrients you need except b12.

The problem with potatoes is that they have little protein compared to beans and lentils. They're also incredibly filling, to an extreme extent if you eat them baked. I tried eating McDougall in a day and was stuffing myself to the point of nausea by the end and still didnt hit my calorie needs

check the protein and nitrogen experiments done in human subjects in the early 20th century where people were fed nothing but potatos for protein, it's quite an eye opener in my opinion.

A 70kg man who was physically active and played sports achieved nitrogen balance at the intake of 5-6 grams of nitrogen.
1g nitrogen = 6.3g protein
40g of protein from potato not only made the male achieve a nitrogen balance it actually provided a nitrogen surplus for months straight.
I know potatos have low protein compared to other foods like legumes but most of the nitrogen in potatos isn't sourced from its protein, potatos have lots of free amino acids that reinforce its amino acid profile, and not to mention protein digestibility and biological value of potatos are MUCH higher than that of beans.

This is when I started implementing peanut butter/tahini in my diet, it works great with the amino acid profile of potatos too.
Mcdougall's recommendation of very very low fat in the diet is only helpful for people who are fat and don't exercise, I would add a bunch of fat if I was having problems eating enough.

when you care about LONGEVITY specifically, which is his interest, the key is caloric restriction - the okinawans who were easily the longest lived population had an average calorie intake of like 1900 or something despite being very physically active (they also predominantly ate sweet potatoes and rice). calorie restriction is one of the few proven ways to extend lifespan in terms of the whole longevity field, which is sort of a different thing than 'young person fitness' which ppl here are into. greger and a lot of other plant based people are focused primarily on disease prevention and longevity
Caloric restriction only extends your lifespan if you started doing it when you were a child, because it stunts your growth. Doing it as an adult is pointless.
