I just started running again and I'm trying to rest at least 4 days between runs because last time I started after a long break I developed brutal shin splints that took months of rest before they went away
I'm doing toe and heel raises during rest days, should I be stretching as well?
I've read about this, but I'm scared to try since I've had so many problems before

Probably too much stress, I found walking on an incline treadmill for a few weeks works wonders, also loosing a little weight does wonders. 5 lbs lighter makes a high difference. Then go back to lightly jogging and increase slowly

You can get the form down a lot faster by running barefoot on grass. You naturally have shorter strides and use the balls of your feet when you don't have running shoes interfering with your form. Do this a bit and then apply the difference that you felt in your barefoot runs in your more serious road runs.

If you're a heal-striker, you're deleting your ball and ankle from the chain of springs in your leg. You're making your knee take 50% and your hip take 50%. Ball-strike and the ball takes 25%, ankle 25%, knee 25% and hip 25%. Your hip pain will vanish. Oh but then you get ankle and arch pain instead.

hmm, then I maybe land more "flat footed" than I thought, since the only problem I've ever had when running (though it's been a big problem) is by calves and shins feeling like they're made of rock after running 3 km or so when I'm out of shape
I've been running for years, typically 10-13 mile trainings and running a half-mari race every quarter. I have aches and pains constantly. My shins are killing me right this second and my veins are bulging in one leg. I wear compression socks every day now. I think it's just inevitable. My knees click. My ankles click. One of my hips clicks and pops. But I like running anyway.

Best advice.

does this actually reduce the pain? I seriously doubt it helps with recovery

How the FUCK do I beat shin splints? EVERY FUCKING TIME THESE NIGGERS COME BACK

Are you fat? Stop being fat. The weight is making it worse. Are you not fat? Your form is probably shit. Are you a healthy weight with good form? Then they're not actually shin splints and you're just being a bitch. Keep running. It'll hurt if you're out of practice, power through.

i found that digging the pointed end of a 99 cent nerf football into my shin splints workings really well, its way softer than using a foam roller or a tennis ball.

Your not activating glootes, you gotta to squeeze the glutes every step, it'll dramatically help
Lincoln Jones
Shin splints are an overuse injury. Just don't be a retard with your training.

thats horrible for your back

Need new shoes. These things are ages old. I like nike and the new epic react look cool except the whole Bottom of the shoe is pretty much mid sole and prob wears quickly, turns, the new ultra boost 19s? I like nike but kind of want to try something different. Any other options like the new balance stuff, Brooks, or saucony?
Beginner runner. Will mostly run 5ks maybe some sprints to up endurance.
