"Calorie restriction of 20 to 30 percent will increase neurogenesis...

ted.com/talks/sandrine_thuret_you_can_grow_new_brain_cells_here_s_how

"Calorie restriction of 20 to 30 percent will increase neurogenesis. Intermittent fasting -- spacing the time between your meals -- will increase neurogenesis. Intake of flavonoids, which are contained in dark chocolate or blueberries, will increase neurogenesis. Omega-3 fatty acids, present in fatty fish, like salmon, will increase the production of these new neurons. Conversely, a diet rich in high saturated fat will have a negative impact on neurogenesis. Ethanol -- intake of alcohol -- will decrease neurogenesis. However, not everything is lost; resveratrol, which is contained in red wine, has been shown to promote the survival of these new neurons. So next time you are at a dinner party, you might want to reach for this possibly "neurogenesis-neutral" drink.

And then finally, let me point out the last one -- a quirky one. So Japanese groups are fascinated with food textures, and they have shown that actually soft diet impairs neurogenesis, as opposed to food that requires mastication -- chewing -- or crunchy food.

So all of this data, where we need to look at the cellular level, has been generated using animal models. But this diet has also been given to human participants, and what we could see is that the diet modulates memory and mood in the same direction as it modulates neurogenesis, such as: calorie restriction will improve memory capacity, whereas a high-fat diet will exacerbate symptoms of depression -- as opposed to omega-3 fatty acids, which increase neurogenesis, and also help to decrease the symptoms of depression. So we think that the effect of diet on mental health, on memory and mood, is actually mediated by the production of the new neurons in the hippocampus. And it's not only what you eat, but it's also the texture of the food, when you eat it and how much of it you eat."

Interesting, thanks

Interesting, but how legit is the science here? Ted talks always strike me as pretty dubious in terms of credibility.

fasting GOAT.
imagine thinking you need to eat 6 meals a day lmao.

>mfw fatties are eating themselves into stupidity

Most of Jow Forums seems to think that IF/fasting either works or fucks you up, and I've seen posts with sources that supports both sides. Is there a good credible source that has info on the subject I can find?

TED is good, TEDx is garbage.

Fasting doesn't work at all. A lot of the claims fasting people make are nonsense.

For example, they claim release of HGH will make your muscles grow. However, if that was true people in concentration camps would be jacked.

Insulin is anabolic, which is suppressed when fasting, hence why you never get a serious athlete on keto or fasting.

Don’t know about that study but pic related is an expert in longevity (has a phd, professor at USC, widely tipped to receive a Nobel prize soon) and his diet advocates fasting/calorie restriction for a longer lifespan.

Oh yeah he’s 52 as well

Fasting is a starvation cult similar to the nofap cult. They latch onto one irrelevant fact and blow it up.

idiot you are quoting people that are misinterpreting data.
the increase of HGH is to maintain muscle, which is what all studies on fasting show - you maintain while losing body fat.

How serious does intermittent fasting need to be for it to work? I wanna skip breakfast and go from dinner to lunch but my stomach groans like a dying train if I don't at least eat an apple, and it's a bit embarrassing at work. Would one or two fruits be fine?

Seriously. Its just reddit-tier mental masturbation

research leptin and ghrelin, but basically the widest window you want is 9 hours, and you want to get the window as small as possible.
anything that is not water starts your timer, although I restrict water into a 9 hour window and only eat in ~1 hour window.

so uhh what's the source on this pic

>Insulin is anabolic
>durrrr

Insulin prevents fat burning. The best way to lose fat and keep muscle is fasting.

Anti-fasting people are so utterly retarded it makes me want to fast even though I don't need to lose weight.

Whoa, sick refutation to all of the science that backs up fasting

"Eating all day" is a cult of fat, low will power retards

Well people starved to death in concentration camps. It's a little different if you're a 300lb fuck, isn't it?

Pictures of emaciated camp inmates are people who had typhus.

What's the point of growing new brain cells ? That'll never make us smarter, at least not to a point that we can notice it.

I'm assuming reduction of impact from degenerative diseases, or at least prolonging the time before the effects take hold

I need source... because I'm interested, but I read a lot of bullshit on this board so I'd like a source for a change

No food will make you smarter or increase your IQ. This is all bullshit, and there are no tests on people about this. Get a stupid man, feed him all that stuff for half a year and test him then to see if he is smarter. Show me the results.

What am I looking at here?

For what in particular? The fact that insulin prevents fat burning is well known and not controversial.

Lipohypertrophy at insulin injection sites (lipo means fat).

Diabetics who get prescribed insulin typically gain 20-30lbs of fat. Insulin is an obesogenic hormone.

I think its more about preventing dementia and memory loss, not raising IQ.

The transition from the fed state to the fasted state occurs in several stages:3

1. Feeding: During meals, insulin levels are raised. This allows glucose uptake by tissues such as the muscle or brain for direct use as energy. Excess glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver.
2. The post-absorptive phase (six to twenty-four hours after fasting starts): Insulin levels being to fall. The breakdown of glycogen releases glucose for energy. Glycogen stores last for roughly twenty-four hours.
3. Gluconeogenesis (twenty-four hours to two days): The liver manufactures new glucose from amino acids and glycerol. In non-diabetic persons, glucose levels fall but stay within the normal range.
4. Ketosis (one to three days after fasting starts): The storage form of fat, triglycerides, is broken into the glycerol backbone and three fatty acid chains. Glycerol is used for gluconeogenesis. Fatty acids may be used for directly for energy by many tissues in the body, but not the brain. Ketone bodies, capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier, are produced from fatty acids for use by the brain. Ketones can supply up to 75 percent of the energy used by the brain.4 The two major types of ketones produced are beta hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate, which can increase more than seventy-fold during fasting.5

5. Protein conservation phase (after five days): High levels of growth hormone maintain muscle mass and lean tissues. The energy for maintenance of basal metabolism is almost entirely met by the use of free fatty acids and ketones. Increased norepinephrine (adrenalin) levels prevent the decrease in metabolic rate.

The human body is well adapted for dealing with the absence of food. What we’re describing here is the process the body undergoes to switch from burning glucose (short term) to burning fat (long term). Fat is simply the body’s stored food energy. In times of food scarcity, stored food (fat) is naturally released to fill the void. The body does not “burn muscle” in an effort to feed itself until all the fat stores are used.

It’s crucial to note that all these beneficial adaptive changes do not occur in the caloric-reduction diet strategy.

are you retarded or just black?

this isn't about IQ

So how long one should fast ?

Huh. Well I had a psychotic meltdown while getting skinny on OMAD and have been feeling normal since fattening up again

Couldn't handle all that brain, I guess

/Co/ will know.
It's from a lesbian webcomic. As a leftists, even I think it's shit and the porn isn't even worth it.

It depends what your goal is.

If you're already healthy you should incorporate fasting into your lifestyle in a way that works for you. Intermittent fasting is easy because it basically just means no snacking. You can take it further by skipping breakfast or doing OMAD.

One or two 36 hour fasts per week is also a great way to incorporate fasting into your routine.

Longer fasts probably should be reserved for when you have a high body fat percentage and want to cut.

Moon over june.

GROWTH HORMONE IS known to increase the availability and utility of fats for fuel. It also helps to preserve muscle mass and bone density.9 Growth hormone secretion is difficult to measure accurately because of its intermittent release, but it decreases steadily with age. One of the most potent stimuli to growth hormone secretion is fasting.10 Over a five-day fasting period, growth hormone secretion more than doubled. The net physiologic effect is to maintain muscle and bone tissue mass during the fasting period.

who said something about not eating?
jesus fucking christ, it's too late for some of you

these niggers are literally LYING to you

Take for example this study showing a similar result to the assertion that high fat or high saturated fat reduces brain effectiveness.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3362800/

>A total of 15 male rats were randomly selected for this study with a constraint that at least 2 rats from each litter were selected (Fig 1). On postnatal day (PND) 90 the male rats were randomly divided into two subgroups i.e. DHA (n = 6) continued on same n-3 enriched diet and high-fat diet (HFD; n = 9) provided with a custom diet high in saturated fatty acids that closely resembles to western diet (D12079B, Research Diets, NJ USA). This HFD has 21% total fat but saturated fatty acid make 62.4% of this total fat.

>21% of calories is fat
>13% of total calories is saturated fat
>"""""""""""""""high fat diet"""""""""""""""""""""

These researchers are operating on the faulty assumption of the inherent negative nature of fat in a diet ignoring all context. Because adding fat to a high carb diet does indeed make your health worse, fat is blamed. When you remove carbs (making fat 70%+ of total calories), fat becomes perfectly healthy and actually health boosting. The reason for this is the processes governing fat and carb metabolism compete all over the place. The more balanced your fat and carb macros, the harder it is for your body to properly metabolize the energy without damage.

Read the fucking research before you take reported conclusions as fact.

>these niggers are literally LYING to you

What is their endgame here?
