I've recently started training, and the only squatting spot in my relatively small gym is one of those machines where the bar is guided. The trainer have told me to put my feet very in front of me, so when I'm at the end of my squat I look like I'm sitting on an invisible chair. I'm concerned that this is not the correct form, as I will change gym in a few months and don't want to get any bad habits. Is there any merit to what the trainer have told me ? Is this just a way to reduce risk of injury ?

It's called a smith machine, and if that is all you have, you can either do that or improvise with a dumbbell. If you end up going the smith machine route, just remember to reduce your weight by half when you do proper barbell squats. His advice is right for a smith machine but you don't wanna use that form for a proper bb squat.

Ideally, it should be avoided, but it really depends on your anthropometry.

I don't see the point in his advice, given that, when squatting with a barbell, our goal is to keep the bar path as straight as possible. I'd recommend you read the squat chapter of Starting Strength and follow that advice. I'd also recommend you to find a proper gym, with a proper squat rack, right now, instead of wasting months at the place you currently train.
