wdym
arent most people secularized this days?

Really made me think liberals are just pure evil. How do you flip the switch from smug atheism to sucking islamic cock overnight? At least bible thumpers, libertarians, communists etc. do not wildly change their views en masse overnight

Just because you don't believe in God, it doesn't mean you're an atheist.

It became mainstream

It's because this dude died.

Atheists won over a hundred years ago.

it didn't really fall apart, it's more like people just got sick and tired of those guys saying the same thing over and over again

No one even challenges atheists anymore. The conversation changed from "is god real" (since theists realized they'll never win that) to "but muh Judeo-Christian pillars of society", and they keep losing that too (see Sam Harris vs Jordan Peterson or Matt Dillahunty vs JP).

It would have been interesting to see what Hitchens would have made of the rise of new-idpol (sjws), Trump and the alt-right.

If you're talking about internet/youtube/reddit atheism then the reason for the initial decline was 2011 elevator-gate. That started a whole political rift in the online community, which in turn laid the foundations for gamergate and, arguably, a large part of the alt-right/internet far right (whatever you ant to call it).

Well, he would hate PC culture from both the right and the left. Ideologically he was a leftist though. Rip :'(

Yeah because nobody cares about religion or atheism anymore and have just moved on to politics.

They were prevalent because there was a religious opposition. That is less the case today. Plus prominence doesn't last forever. Not quite 15 minutes of fame but similar principle

Yes it does. What you should really be saying is that just because you're an atheist it doesn't mean you're like Dawkins/the liberals/whoever you dislike.

Will antinatalism ever provoke people to the same extent?

That's a very interesting necktie he has. I think it'd work well in my rotation.

The fedora meme single-handedly killed it.

It was fine for a while until you realize that a lot of the "community" are smug assholes. If that part was gone then it would be a lot more bearable past your angsty teenage years

wait, guys could this be the elusive hacker known as Jow Forums?!

>sucking islamic cock
I see the concept has been defined for you by jews

If you're the new atheists, you don't. Notably, all of them were talking about the dangers of Islam as early as the Bible-thumpers were after 9/11, and still are. Really, it was that event more than anything else that spurred them into the confrontational mode against religion rather than the "old atheist" view of live and let live. Sam Harris in particular is very well known for his criticism of Islam, made famous on Bill Maher's show vs Muhammed Bin Affleck.

Leftist tolerance of Islam isn't based in atheism, it's based in the progressive view on race, the victim hierarchy. Because muslims are quite often brown people, they're held to a lower standard than white people and thus beliefs that would be seen as obviously heinous when associated with whites are instead seen as something to hide or protect from criticism when associated with non-whites. The progressive is engaged in a constant PR campaign for non-whites and imagines that any fudging of the facts, or outright lies, is justified by the need to avoid bigotry, and everything is the West's fault anyway because progressives are egalitarian but only white people have agency.

The new atheists ended up associated with the left, though, because their positive belief basically equates to secular humanism; valuing human wellbeing above all else. And that's common human wellbeing, for every human the world over. Naturally that puts them adjacent to progressives in the broad view, but ultimately the new atheist focus on epistemology runs deeply counter to SJW ethos. As I understand it this was the beginning of the end for the new atheism movement, when women, minorities and minority women started demanding microphone time, codes of conduct and safe spaces at atheist meet-ups. Eventually, the white male neckbeards who had formed the backbone of the movement stopped showing up. Same thing that happened to Occupy Wall Street.
