My theory is that he hated his mom because he knew that, on some level, she didn't love him and resented him for not being a normal, happy kid.
So he killed her, but that wasn't enough. He had to go beyond killing her, by killing the cute, happy kindergarten kids she wished she had given birth to instead of him.
