With the bad guys, she was at least a puppet of a greater force and she didn't have to feel vulnerable. Everything she did was controlled so her greatest fears (hurting her friends as a result of her lack of self-control, possibly facing rejection from her friends as a result of opening up and being vulnerable) were alleviated. She was still hurting her friends, but not for the reasons that scared her, and her fears were so great that, with goading and manipulative abuse from the bad dude (whatever his name was), having to not deal with them, and the relief of knowing that she can't possibly fuck up as an evil minion where her role is clearly defined and she has nothing to lose, were worth it. It was all about fear. Doesn't mean she's stupid, just means she was emotionally fucked up.
Or at least that's how I recall interpreting it.
