Thinking about joining a BJJ gym. What to expect?
Anybody have any experience with BJJ?
> inb4 "bjj is gay hurr"
I'm looking to just learn a martial art and BJJ seems like one of the most non-bullshit ones out there.

It's kinda gay
>non bullshit
>grapple in a street fight
No thanks I’d like to not get knifed in the back by Tyrone’s buddies when I’m trying to get a rear naked choke in.
you will get knifed either way, doesnt matter if standing or laying on the ground.
>all grappling is groundwork
Just thow the dude on rhe concrete lmao

Spending a lot of money
Joint and rib soreness a lot of both of them. It will pass once they get used to being pulled and pushed on. You need mental fortitude it's not easy to go somewhere and lose constantly, be sore, and train hard. It's worth it though I'm 100% a better and more confident person. Ik this is mostly anecdotal but I'm not the only person that holds this opinion. I just won my first tournament this weekend as well, in absolute and 215lbs no gi divisions and it's a pretty good feeling dominating opponents and imposing your will on other people(in tournaments ofcourse don't be a douche irl). Also it gives you a healthy ego it's hard to think you're the biggest baddest mofo as you're getting choked out.
I mean in the sense that you don't do the choreograph fighting shit, and that belt progression is based solely on ability / knowledge.
$50 a month doesn't seem horrible. I can get a discount because I know someone in the gym.
Congrats on the tourny! What belt are you? How long have you been training?
Stop listening to all these idiots that hur dur its gay, stabbed while grappling etc etc, it's fun great cardio and it's better to know it than not know it. Better yourself try it if you like it fine if not o well you're out 50 bucks and sometime. Best case you find a fit hobby or sport you like, worse case you're out 50 bucks and some time.
Oh look, its the bi-weekly bjj thread again.
Bjj is a really fun, addictive sport, I do it all the time. I've even modified my weightlifting to fit around bjj. It will definitely make you stronger, more athletic, it will make you a good grappler. But if you think learning how to grapple will make you a good "street fighter", you deserve to get stabbed.
Being pressed up against smelly, sweaty men all day? Sign me up!
Just wait till you get into it. Gi's, seminars, tournaments, it all adds up. You'll end up spending way more than 50 bucks a month, and you will feel its worth every penny.
I'm a white belt, and probabaly around a year and a half consistently. I would probably be a blue belt desu though if I trained in a gi more, but I train no gi which belts don't really apply to. I just like no gi more it's a lot more intense and incorporates wrestling a lot more(no gi fabric to grab onto to slow people down and solidify positions easier, holding down people and what not is a lot harder when they are sweaty and slippery). Also belts are just to hold pants up if you do end up going just focus on getting better don't worry about belts.
sometimes you get to roll with a sweaty girl though haha
How have you modified your weightlifting to fit around bjj?
Do it at an MMA gym. You NEED to cross train wrestling for it to work at all.

Hehe bjj is gay hehe, but here I am on a board admiring other mens bodies. At least we try to beat each other up instead of just eye fucking each other.
It's more that I've modified my anus to fit around the boners of my bjj buddies.
For self defense? Get concealed carry and a SIG and get trained. If you have to subdue someone, sure, BJJ works and I would build my MMA strategy around it. In a sport situation (no gi, mma cage etc) I would learn it in conjunction with wrestling as it's more systematic and safer in transitioning into control positions.
In a street fight I would use Judo though wrestling can also work well but could take longer than you have for their friends to start ground and pounding you and most people don't know how to fight in a clinch, a judo throw is typically a faster transition into a submission if they don't know what they're doing.
I'd also learn some basic footwork and boxing or muay thai on top of that to ensure you don't get instantly flattened.
Been doing it for four years. It has helped me at my lowest lows. I’ve been getting back into weight lifting and it really is hard to do both. I’m constantly injured from bjj and adding lifting weights 3x a week plus work has made me so sore I almost never get enough rest.
Today I can’t extend my right arm fully and my face has a mattburn on it. I also struggle gaining muscle because bjj is such insane cardio.
I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
