Any of yall do any martial arts?
Any of yall do any martial arts?
Yep, muay thai and BJJ
There's no reason to lift if you don't train in fighting. I really feel like every powerlifter or bodybuilder has an stupid overestimate of their capability in a fight.
One of the things I like about MMA is everyone acts level headed while every fitness expo has middle aged guys acting and dressing like high schoolers
where in fresno are you pussy im gonna fucking come to your gym and fuck up all these retarded mexican kids with my superior clovis genetics
>BJJ+Boxing+Cardio+.380 ACP (Minimum caliber for carry)
>There's no reason to lift if you don't train in fighting.
Give a single reason why.
Violence and its implication create order and respect.
Only lifting creates a bunch of larpers who seek hierarchy over who can be the most high school-tier in implying their fighting ability
I have a black belt in buying-a-gun-no-ryu
2 Stripes white belt on BJJ, have been training for the last 6 months and I really enjoy it, used to do boxing as well under a former middleweight Latin Champion and 3 times runner up to the World Title, but mommy made me drop it because >muh brain damage.
I dunno, I've met some douchebags in BJJ. But that's to be expected everywhere.
this dude definitely got mogged by chad in highschool and is still bitter
2nd Dan Blackbelt in ITF Tae-Kwon-Do (i.e not meme TKD) but don't train it anymore. Train Muay Thai and Boxing now, some BJJ experience too.
The douches in BJJ are the ones who only do BJJ and 0 wrestling or striking so you could probably beat them in a real fight if you know those things. Only doing BJJ is crossfit tier cult mentality.
I would love to see a blue belt take me down knowing 0 muay thai and 0 wrestling. Literally running into my clinch just to not know how to double leg properly or what to do if I resist their takedown.
Nope
BJJ guys train takedowns, not sure what you're going on about. I do agree though they're way too cocky for what they are, but strikers shouldn't be so cocky either; if you get taken to the ground, which isn't too hard, then you're fucked.
t. Muay Thai, Boxing, BJJ
I'm thinking of switching to an MMA gym for that reason, BJJ doesn't train nearly enough wrestling.
100% do that if you're actually wanting to fight.
Yes this is my instructor
The fuck are you even talking about? Have you even considered people lift not because they want to "fight", but for some other reason? Dumbest shit I have ever read.
Catch wrestling and BJJ. Little bit of boxing
BJJ trains double legs a handful of times while wrestlers train them competitively and drill them to death while knowing what openings look like.
No one does "just enough" wrestling in BJJ. Yes BJJ works but wrestling is the science of how not to go to the ground in the first place and I have seen what a wrestler can do with zero BJJ against people who train it.
If you have 0 exp in either striking or wrestling, you have no idea how to resist getting knees and elbows much less reading strikes and looking for openings for the baby takedown they teach you.
Ideally you need all 3 minimum to fight an experienced person.
Thankfully I go to an MMA gym which also has mma sparring classes so you can learn what is sport bullshit BJJ and what is real fighting bjj

Yea Clovis might be the better area, still relatively poor though. I live in SLO and I can't stand the beaners, they are ruining my coast.
I use to do both but I slowly transitioned to doing BJJ almost exclusively. Coach left around that time to another gym that worked better for him. Muay Thai is great but Jits is so damn fun and addicting. I miss hitting the pads, though I can do without the head trauma that comes from sparring.
Nice, keep at it! Also, you're probably better off without taking shots to the head every time you train.
I only do boxing. Anything that looks like weebshit, I'll stay away from.
been doing aikido for 15 years
Should do boxing, savate, and catch wrestling.
You'll be a god of murder and asskickery.
gay
do muay thai
bro what the fuck check em
I just started MuayThai a few weeks ago and really love it. I'm still trash but I can feel a big change physically and mentally. My gym also does BJJ and I really want to do that as well and plan on starting soon. I don't give a fuck about anything but no gi really, but I know it's best to start with gi so that's the plan right now.
My biggest issue is that I'm a fucking cubicle warrior and have zero cardio right now. I really want to work on that but need to research the best way. I just want to be able to enjoy practice without getting gassed almost instantly.
Nogi is best and is more practical because you utilize leverage and not magic clothing grips. Many well known fighters have never used a gi.
Also I recommend going on YouTube and watching Matt Serra's BJJ basics. Drill those moves until you have it in muscle memory.
Yeah, Nogi is the shit for sure. I've been told starting with a gi is best just so you can get the basics as nogi is a little more complex. I'm more interesting in striking specifically MauyThai so I think that's great way to get started too.
but either way, I've been trying to get into shape since I was this guy's age and wish I found something I was actually interested in no matter what it is. It's been great for me and I wish I started at that guy's age.
How poignant and accurate
>A person trained in striking would beat a person trained in grappling if the striker is able to avoid getting taken down
Of course, you dense faggot. That's the plot of like 50% of UFC fights
>Wrestling isn't grappling
The biggest BJJ meme is that it's the only effective form of grappling
>I've never seen a wrestler come in and excel in BJJ
Then you've never been in a BJJ gym. You can't compete as a white belt in BJJ tournaments if you are qualified in wrestling, sambo, or Judo.
The biggest meme is probably that the Gracies started out as super peaceful, Buddhist, quasi-religious figures/Helio was a sickly little guy who just used muh leverage.
>Reading comprehension
At least it's not ninjutsu but that's not saying much
IDGAF about whatever gay point that you were trying to make. Shut the fuck up
I do catch wrestling
I really doubt most bjj fags would argue wrestling isn't also important for grappling, it just doesn't fit into the same category. They're both grappling but one is standing and other is sitting
Based illiterate user
It's mostly a thing you'll see with people new to the sport and larpers but it's a real meme, although I guess you could argue that that isn't a BJJ meme though
Boxing with a bunch of spics in a shit central valley Commiefornia town?
hahahaha
No.
>Being too afraid of spics to take boxing classes
The best way is to just get into it and keep going. Pace yourself through classes and limit how much useless movement you're doing -- those two skills will help a lot both in actual fighting and just surviving, anyway.
You'll get there.
People new to any sport are often insufferable, it's their new identify all of a sudden and its like the best thing ever brah
Wad da fug
I'm 19 months into training and just got my second stripe start of the year. Is my gym sandbagging? Or maybe I just suck
We do mainly no-gi and have a reputation for our white belts beating other schools' coloured belts. Sometime guests will ask what colour belt am i, and I'll sheepishly say w-white.
Also, the blue belts in my gym only got it after they get a medal in a comp.
Aren't we talking specifically about the specific habits of the subsection of insufferable retards that do BJJ though? No one here's retarded enough to think this applies to all of BJJ right?
lmao BJJ and other hand to hand martial arts are fucking retarded for actual self defense. Their fine if you just enjoy them, but take defensive firearm courses.
If you are really concerned about getting too up-close and personal then learn a knife/dagger martial arts like people have been doing for literally thousands of years. Pic related moggs any non-weapon martial art and actually has a solid history of self successful defense.
I just started kickboxing and I reay want to start BJJ in the future. I just don't know how to combine lifting with those two. What routine would be best? So far I've narrowed it down to either something like SS or Westside for Skinny Bastards.
Any thoughts on combining martial arts with lifting?
If you want to talk about what people have historically done for self defense then you're retarded since wrestling has been a thing everywhere allways
Yea you're right, I'm sure no one here is enough of an absolute retard to think that. God, I sure hope so.
Belt doesn't even matter, dude. Eventually you'll see that. Once upon a time I was in my third year and getting anxious about wen I would become a purple. I got injured in a competition class and then right as I was recovering, I got sick. I realized that, even on the days I didn't want to get up and go to the gym, BJJ was the best part of my day. I wanted more than anything to be back in the gym rolling. I wanted to learn and force my will against an opponent.
But also, unless you don't show up very much, your gym is promoting you extraordinarily slowly. Like, it seems comical because nobody who shows up consistently needs 2 years to be a blue belt.
I want to get into BJJ, how effective is it as self-defense compared to a striking art?
Don't use a martial art for self-defense, unironically listen to Everything is useless against a weapon.
Everything is useless against his friend that sneaks up on you.
Everything is useless when a police officer decides to shoot you for being brown.
If you want the best results, you should train for the 800M dash or work on your social skills.
Both are shit holes imo. Oh man I'm jealous the chicks are so fucking hot in SLO
This is true. Good shit rolling with a D1 wrestler who is a white belt unless you have your shit together. You'll get smashed.
Do both, grappling is more controlled than striking, not even the best boxer in the world can know what will happen once he knocks someone out and they fall against the concrete. With a choke it's more controlled and measured. If you want to do a grappling art for self defence do wrestling.
Those spics will stuff your mouth guard and teeth through your asshole no doubt.
Is mui thai worth it? I workout 6 days a week high volume, some Mexican tried to rob me
Training isn't guaranteeing you the ability to win a fight. Even if you train but are a small-mid sized guy you will probably get your shit pushed in by a big son of a bitch. Even UFC fighters admit size is extremely important. Why do you think there's weight classes? Also why Bob Sapp's retarded ass still managed to be almost .500 in MMA against trained guys solely because he was fucking huge
no
Thanks for the insight playa. I really like what I've done so far and almost crave leg kicking and elbowing someone (not that I ever would). It's awesome and I want to keep it up to get better but my skinny fat cardio is such a chore.
Yeah, I think it depends on your gym but it isn't a big deal. The main thing is that you are participating and learning.
If I get in a fist fight I’m not gonna pull a gun on the nigga, that’s just overkill, and cowardly if I’m honest
Troll post, BUT:
Anyone who actually believes this has never been in a real physical confrontation. Also having a weapon or not doesn't make the training any more useful. Hold up nvm let me take a knife fighting class so I can eat some dick and suck some balls real quick.
>Get hit too hard
>Fall to the concrete
>Brain rattles
>Lose the ability to speak
"B-b-but at least I was a brave retard."
Seconded, and if they do then they'll be jailed. And possibly ostracized for being too much a pussy to fight
Not him, but that's rare as fuck. People don't usually go retard mode cause they fell.
Lift hot girls onto your dick to gain mass and work on cardio. It never worked for me because of my lazy eye but you should be good and it will help.
I wrestled in high school and played other varsity sports like i should have. If you lift now and never played varsity sports in hs you are a coping gymcel
going back to the gym, particularly doing muay thai now after i skipped gym for 2 plus years and i ballooned up to 212 lbs
cardio has been my biggest weakness, but hopefully that can be fixed soon
The idea isn't about being a god in the streets, it's about defending yourself in an unavoidable situation. In a way what he says is true, but is a small percentage of confrontation.
This guy is right, grappling is a great skill, only issue is getting to the ground or being on the ground because that's not always an option. A mix of striking and grappling is the best. Doesn't take much training in grappling to be able to control a lot of people on the ground though, so that is low hanging fruit.
Most places will stripe you every 6 or 12 months depending on your skill and training schedule, I was the exception because I trained a lot on these six months, doing 6 2hrs classes per week for a couple of months, and am pretty talented for the stuff, according to my masters; might be the judo I did growing up still manifesting in muscle memory. This is not common in the team though. Getting a podium is also a requirement for getting that blue belt at my place, though only for the regular students (seniors and injured guys are exempt, the last man to graduate had to deal with palsy since birth and to this has a very clumsy right side, especially his right leg), and it isn't the only requirement, as we have some 4 stripe whites that won many competions and should've graduated years ago, but haven't because they can't hold a consistent training regime for more than a month. One of them is even our second Black Belt and main instructor's wife, so it isn't them simply being pricks.
19 months for second stripe is well within normal for the most strict gyms, though I'd still be wary. With above avarage skill and dedication the road to Black Belt takes about 10 years, so use that as a reference; some places like to keep you from promoting to earn bragging rights with other teams in regards to how good their whites and blues are.
Learning an effective martial art would prevent this from happening. I also don’t need to have a mans life in my hands every time I get into a bar fight. If I pull a gun in hopes that my opponent gives up, what do I do if he doesn’t? I guess it’s murder time. Meanwhile if I choke him out, he’ll still be alive and I’ll have successfully defended myself quicker and easier than with a gun. I mean, self defense isn’t the main reason I want to learn a martial art, I just like MMA. It’s just an added benefit.
It might be rare to go full retard if you fall, but it'll be even rarer if you can just outrun the other person or dissuade fighting with a weapon.
Unsanctioned fighting is. fucking. retarded.
It really is one of your best striking options. Its either that or boxing really. Boxing is nice for the movement and more focus on hands which really dominate street fights but MT has elbows, knees and a different understanding of clinch. Plus if you can really kick you can do work against an average street fighter. Most people don't realize how much it sucks to get leg kicked much less knocked out with a head kick.
me too dog. I hope your tall though haha. My cardio is trash and I need to work on it.
I feel a deep disgust in my stomach reading that. If I saw one guy threaten to fight another and he pulled a gun in response he'd be ostracized for sure. I wouldn't want to know such a massive pussy that couldn't take a disagreement to its end.
clinch is the big killer in muay thai really for fights
tiny ass thais are able to completely dominate larger guys by putting them in a thai clinch
This is the most mature answer and is true as AF
this
whipping out a pistol for any sort of disagreement or argument makes you look like a nigger
Tbf assuming everyone here is American rather than Thai, boxing gyms are cheap, plentiful and full of fighters.
MT gyms are rare and more likely to be primarily a profit making enterprise in yuppy areas.
Fuck yeah, it is so awesome to watch.. Those Thai guys are fucking MONSTERS. Getting clinched and kneed is such a nightmare
no shit, but the best martial artist in the world can't do shit when the other guy pulls a gun. Responsibly carry and practice BJJ for bar fights.
Lifters raging about this lmao but it's true. It's simple really. Bodybuilding is basically peacocking.
Dude spics gyms are the best boxing gyms, hands down. You WILL learn how to fight and also get access to prime Latino pussy.
mock ninjitsu after you have seen my eye-gouge jutsu
idk wtf your talking about... Thai gyms aren't more prevalent in America than other places and I would assume it all depends on your country of origin. Holland for example has some seriously top gyms. There are a lot of both in America and the prices don't vary much (for quality gyms). Plus if you don't have the money stop being poor.
dutch gym are good except for the fact that they go all in the sparring
why does boxing attract low IQ people like hispanics, blacks, and white trash like Charlie Zelenoff?
Is boxing just easier than muay thai?
WHOMST
>The end of a disagreement is le fisticuffs like le gentLEmen
Maybe you find a way to deescalate a situation instead of training martial arts to beat the shit out of somebody when they accidentally spill beer on you.
Boxing gyms are common and cheap in America. MT gyms are more rare. When MT gyms are present, they're more expensive and there's a bigger chance they're zumba dance fitness with a different flavor.
You're the same moron who has never been in a physical confrontation. Pull a gun every time? Good shit moron, not realistic or effective for the vast majority of situations you would find yourself in outside or your trailer or your mom's boyfriend's house. The only argument for that is you're too lazy, fat, gay, or stupid to learn and practice something new.
Boxing has the biggest pay days out of all the combat sports, so of course it attracts those with the least money.
martial arts helps you control yourself too simpleton
no one in training you would say that oh you'd definitely do this roundhouse kimura upperjab if some stupid yobbo tried to diss you in the watering hole
