/Firefighter/Police/ Training

Any firefighters and policeman here that want to talk about their physical preparation for the job?

I'll have to make a 3k run in 12 min and train for that now, going running three times a week and training muscle endurance by doing pushups/pullups for amrap sets. I have a lot going on personaly right now but when I'll have some more free time I plan on doing /owg/ weightlifiting mon/wed/fri .

Applying for NJ State Police, definitely one of the hardest if not the hardest police academy in the country. I stopped lifting and need to meet the physical requirement test by the middle of this month.

A buddy of mine is going through the academy now, he went in at 280 lbs and I saw him two weeks ago, he’s cut up and slim as fuck at 210 lbs. He was only 12 weeks in at that point, he’s still got another 10 weeks. From what he told me, they’re running 3-5 miles at a 9 minute pace at this point. They barely let you eat over there, they run and PT every day, sometimes after lights out, the instructors will wake them up after they’re all asleep to go for a run on the beach and PT in the sand. They break you physically and mentally.

>they wake you up at night to run 9 minute miles

I honestly hate to be the guy to say it, but wow civilians are giant pussies

I’m entering EMT academy atm but after some experience on the job plan to paramedic and fire. I’m mainly lifting and doing cardio to prep for the fire but that’s still 2-3 years away.

If you’re preparing and training to pass the exams another thing you should do if you can is practice the actual drills like the hose pull and all that, definitely do stair running too. You can find full tests on YouTube, idk how you’d practice them early on though

I might join the volunteer fire department near me while I work as an EMT, see if I can work on my off days

How old are you? 3k in 12 should be an attainable 30 day goal for even an out of shape 35 year old.

I'm only 20 but I have a hard time getting better at running, had an epigastrial hernia last spring and started doing sports again in september last year and I don't really know how to program for it. I run a 5k the first running day of the week, then a 3k on the second and on the third I run Interval like in the countryside, doing sprints uphill and resting by running a slow pace donwnhill

No, you're right. That's pussy shit. You can get there with about 6 months of solid training. A 45 minute run at 9 minute pace is not that bad at all if you do daily cardio.
I did tons of running in highschool/college. We were going 10 miles daily at 7ish minute pace towards the end of our workouts, as well as HIIT and weekly 70 minute runs at a medium pace.
But shit, they should let the men eat. And sleep. That's super important for your gains. I get that it builds mental fortitude but still

Hey njbro, I'm gonna apply for the academy after I get my bachelors and that beach is fucking hell to run on. Gonna fucking suck to have to do that every day.

Well that’s just halfway through the academy, they only increase the miles and quicken the pace. I think their training consists of boxing, jumping into a 20 foot pool to retrieve a brick and then treading water with the brick for over 5 minutes. I think they also have to go into the ocean with full gear on, swim a certain distance and back.

The academy is at a National Guard base and I went through the NJDOC academy and the NJ State Police also has their academy there. Our academy was a goddamn joke compared to them. I remember waking up in the middle of the night, seeing and hearing them out on the PT field shouting cadence while running and PTing. I know a couple of Marines who are NJ troopers now and they said its harder than the Marines.

My buddy was telling me that love to make everyone do pushups, mountain climbers and bear crawls through the mud. I think they made them do a 1.5 mile bear crawl the first week. I can’t wait to get absolutely rekt if I make it into the academy.

I’ll tell you one thing, I never see any out of shape or obese State troopers. They have meet minimum fitness standards every 6 months even while already on the job. Uniforms are always pressed, shoes shined.

Current emsfag
Go fire/nursing as soon as you can and don't do ems full time

Check the requirements bro, I think you can apply as long as you have 80 and will have your bachelors by next year in June. Or an associates plus 2 years of working experience, doesn’t have to be consecutive.

Yes bro i know, I remember doing sprints in the sand. I’m still in NJDOC and while the academy wasn’t easy, State Police is the real deal. I miss good ol’ Sea Girt, can’t wait to go back.

>bouncing reps
not gonna make it

Now that sounds like a lot more fun. Gotta start slow for sure. I know people in military who are out of shape as shit and I always wonder how we can deploy these people. I live in NJ and I pass a state trooper building every day. That sounds like a lot more of a trial and it's good to know that we're making them work. Makes me feel safer lmao

Yeah dude, a lot of fucking respect for those who wear that uniform, you were definitely not given that. You earned that right.

My buddy was telling me that during hell week after a starved, excruciating week of exercise, they let everyone Friday night around 6 and right before the first car gets to the gate, the instructors start screaming at everyone to turn back around, unpack all your shit and get back into PT gear. They had to PT/run for another 2 hours. Not a lot of people make it through the academy, hopefully I do when the time comes.

This could've been a really cool webm

I’m only gonna spend 6-8 months working EMT, and that’s just for not ehands on experience so I’ll make a better paramedic/ firefighter. Honestly I dont even wanna do paramedic I just know doing both fire and paramedics pays more and will help me get hired with a department.

When you say full time, do mean hours or as a life long career? I always assumed ems was 40+ hours/week and they didn’t have part time hours. If they do I’ll probably start full time and switch to part time after a while

Alolan marowak gains

I'm a firefighter. The best prep you can do for the academy is buy a weighted vest and run up and down stairs as much as you can. That will prepare you for having 75lbs of gear and a 15lb length of hose on your shoulder going up stairs.

The upper body stuff isn't that hard for anyone who has worked out before. The leg endurance is the toughest.

Week 1--get to 12 minute mile (not hard pace)
REST HARD on weekend
Week 2--get to 10 minute mile
REST HARD
Week 3--get to 9 minute mile

Keep going until 6 minute mile, test will be easy. Ask your local high school cross-country coach for advice.

This will NOT be the time for any low-carb bullshit. Quick medium-range distance=bananas and bread.
Week 3--

>9 minute miles
you mean jogging?

Firefighters and policemen are a joke if you aren’t in a big city

You don’t need to eat as much if you’re that big. They probably have meal plans for the skinny guys and big guys so they end up losing bf and gaining muscle mass
