There are 6 major amino acids that are necessary for the facilitation of the muscle growth machinery in skeletal muscle by a molecule called mTOR however an abundance of all amino acids are necessary to prompt muscle growth (Bar-Peled & Sabatini, 2014). Leucine and arganine are the most critical or mTOR activation.
When looking at the amino acid (aa) composition of protein powders, you will find that whey has the best aa profile to activate mTOR and provide all necessary aa.
If you are looking for plant protein powders, pea protein isolate and onions protein isolate have comparable measures of leucine and varying levels of arganine (Vegan protein lab, n.d.).
It should be stated that your diet should already by in top shape before supplementing with protein powder. The general rule is to acheive 1 gram of protein (of quantity and quality) per 1 pound of body weight to keep the gains train running.
I have heard that plant protein is not as bioavailable as animal protein and this will have to be up to you to research since I see studies indicating that this statement is true or that it is false and both are absorbed just as well (de Gavelle et al., 2017).
