Got a point about SCA being fairly con/anime larp. HEMA's a lot more respectable. WOuld argue it's better than hmb desu.

But yea actual fencing is goat. Feel like it's gotten less popular for some weird reason, I competed on a statewide level back in early high school like 03-04, and there are less clubs, less vendors etc than there back in the day. I haven't been to a club in years, but just investigating every so often online yields troublesome results.

I don't participate in HEMA, but I have a friend who runs a Pittsburgh group that goes pretty far nationally. I've watched a few demonstrations and competitions, as well as been to a couple of after parties. Here are my thoughts:

-There's a pretty big variety of people.

You'd think this would be a bunch of LARPing nerds, and they are there. But there are also guys from all walks of life, including Hell's Angels members, lawyers, garbage men, etc. They also have plenty of younger students and enough women to have their own respectable division.

-People there are surprisingly strong with a lot of stamina.

This might be obvious, but swinging a sword around is difficult, and they put a lot of effort into just lasting through the match. There are boomers there with more energy than me, and I box as a hobby.

-It's a strong community.

Maybe it's because it's an alternative sport and you have to seek it out, but people there seem pretty supportive of one another, both in and out of the organization. They also have great after parties after major matches out in the woods, where they roast a pig and set up an entire whiskey bar for adults. The camaraderie is some of the strongest I've seen, especially given all the different kinds of people that attend these things.

I don't know if I'd join myself, but it's not as bad or as cringey as people here are making it out to be.

I saw a gathering of about 100 of these fuckers practicing. They had fun. It was about 2:1 on the dick to hole ratio. Most people were fat - as is true anywhere. However there was variety of people there. Antifa types - and dudes with grunt style former military shit (or at least pretending). There were nerds of course.

Everyone seemed to be having a fun. I left right way.

Mail is good for preventing damages from light/medium slashes.

They also had mail patches connected to the plates.

The absolute best suits of armor were so well articulated that there was no need for mail because the plates were mobile enough to allow movement without leaving those joints vulnerable.

Keep in mind mail was worn under padding of some kind, typically a gambeson. It may not have offered as solid protection as plate, but coupled with padding, it was good enough to include.

The reenactor here isn't wearing mail because it would be too heavy and expensive for something most viewers wouldn't notice or care about.

Being doing rapier+longsword for about 3 years now.
You'll find tons of fatties yes but theres also fit people (mainly tournament competitors, fatties usually disregard fitness as they dont like tournaments because they just cant go through one not even think making through pools).
Mainly is boomers larping (at least here), young people usually just want to beat the shit out of each other.

Used to do buhurts when I was younger. But we were doing mostly 10th century, so no full plate. Gambesons, leather shirts, chainmail, maybe an occasional lamellar from Birka.
It was fun. Not the biggest fan of tournaments and straight up combats, but manuevers were awesome. 2-3 day footslogs in the woods with occasional skirmishes or sieges and usually a big ffa battle at the end.

and if you want a serious answer: is not possible for any real human being to use such kind of sword. the biggest sword possible used by humans has been claymores, montantes (and all their variants) and ōdachis. those are the longest and more heavy swords ever used, and every single one of them will fail in a 1v1 duel against any 1 handed "long" sword (if both duelist have the same skill level)
