Where I work, depending on the item, we pull outdates 7, 14, 30, and 60 days within expiration. They get scanned as damages and either sent back to our distribution center or thrown away. We are not allowed to take things that get thrown away because we'd be able to just scan something that we know is a throw away (almost all food) and not expired and take it home. It's a loss prevention thing. By not letting anyone take any damages it's supposed to prevent people from creating damages and shopping for free that way.

You get fired. I used to work at vitamin shoppe and a coworker would bring those little plastic tubs and fill them up with stuff that got returned. He would leave like 10-20% of it in there to make it believeable. He would also dumpster dive for stuff that was thrown out and one time the new girl snitched on him because a promotion was up for grabs and they fired him. The fucked purging is the new girl was a landwhale and the dude who was fired actually lifts.
