I FUCKING LOVE THE STAIR MASTER. 10 - 20m at a medium-high speed at the end of every gym session.
That feeling that your glutes are about to explode and your calves are going to go full spasm is something special.
And swimming because it's impact free so easy on the joints. Swim and use the stair machine for good cardio gains, not fucking your joints (both are easy on the joints unlike running), and they actually build muscle or at least will tone you nicely.

Not really. It would be something like 90sec hard 30 sec easy ten to fifteen times. Will beat you into shape really well. HIIT is kind of a meme though the best thing for getting cardio fit is high intensity for a long time. Doing a temp at 15 seconds slower per mile than your 5K pace for three to six miles is the best thing for your endurance.

I start my workout with a two mile run then walk until I hit 30 mins in the treadmill. Gets me in the workout mode and the walking lets me clear my head. I find the running easier and easier the more I do it although it’s still annoying. When I first started .5 miles would have me gasping now I don’t get tired until about 1.5 miles.
Yeah I tried to do a run + my usual workout but found I’d really wanna skip on the days I added the run

If you just want to lift harder, keep cardio on low intensity, long duration - aka active recovery
my recovery from being gassed is much much quicker from doing loads of HIIT, so a fairly great benefit for anyone playing sports.

Cardio is exercise. It demands energy to recover. Doing cardio means you have less power for lifts. Just as doing 10 types of curls every week means you have less energy for a Squat.
Cardio is important, so have your priorities straight. More cardio, less strength. Or more strenght and less cardio. Or balance and have a Little of both. Its up to you

I think you should differentiate between plain cardio and increasing your work capacity. If you get gassed walking to the weights, you will never and I repeat, NEVER accumulate enough volume in your training to make any real gains. To reach your goals you need gas in the tank. If you don't want to bore yourself to death do sled sprints, hill sprints, assault bike sprints, barbell/dumbell/kettlebell complexes or supersets. It has to do with your programming. Also stop being a pussy mentally.
You are supposed to do some sort of HIIT once you have the cardio base.
