maybe get out there in a world a little and get some cuts and bruises.

It never "left" because you quit cold turkey for years and tried nce to get back into it and SURPRISE it's still weak. You need to retrain and heal your quad. Slow and steady. Do half squats first, eventually after a while get down to ass to grass bodyweight, then you can start adding actual weight. It might take a few months or even a year. I hurt my legs a few times last year, had to stop squatting deep and with weights, now I'm doing deeper squats than ever.
