but yes, they meant the red path for the way up. The premise being that you have don't have the bar perfectly over your shoulder at the bottom of the lift as it makes the shoulder susceptible to injury, but you want it over the shoulder as it goes up for efficiency of force application

everyone at my pl gym including the bloatlord coaches bench with a diagonal bar path so that the bar is on your chest way below your nipples and they push it back over towards above their chin. i started doing this and got incredible shoulder pain on the eccentric. i did an almost completely vertical bar path today and felt good.
