The reason why Asian males have higher bioavailable testosterone levels is because there seems to be a high indication that there are racial differences in 5-alpha-reductase levels. DHT is a more potent androgen than testosterone because unlike testosterone, it does not get converted to estradiols and estrogen with aromatase enzymes. DHT is responsible for secondary characteristic growth and sex drive in pre-pubescent and post-pubescent life, which is why it is linked to ambiguous genitalia upon birth as well as male-hormone linked conditions such as prostate cancer and hair loss. During puberty however, bioavailable testosterone levels are more significant in growth of secondary sex characteristics.
