I think you've misunderstood me. I don't think those customs and norms were bad for society. Religion and societal pressures that encourage an appealing set of behaviors such as morality and patience are good and prove especially helpful for young children who need more guidance than their families can give. I'm not here to push some progressive narrative, I'm just saying that assuming things were peachy back in the day is a lie.
People needed religion and cultural norms and societal pressures that encourage restraint and compassion and faith/hope because things weren't ideal. People felt reckless and lost and unfulfilled and so they sought out religion and other cultural norms that would help. It didn't fix the problem entirely but it put guard rails in place essentially.

The only thing that's really changed is our perception of it and the norms/customs that control it. Maybe we were better off with the customs, I tend to believe so, but most people have a weak will and poor restraint because norms don't make up for shitty upbringing. If you're family and community haven't embodied the norms to begin with, it doesn't matter what norms they hold. If your community leaders says, be patient and wholesome and have virtue, but then embezzles money and beat his wife, his words mean little. If your dad says, be brave and compassionate, but then let's people trample him and won't stand up for himself, his words mean nothing.
