Pre-diabetics especially should be shown how bad diabetes can be to motivate prevention.
Diabetics often have some small wound in their foot develop into some horrifying shit because the wound can't heal up, the diabetic doesn't feel the pain, and probably can't even see their feet so they're totally oblivious to a festering wound until it gets really bad. It's probably the most common cause of amputations.

No. Your body can only pull out approximately 32 calories of energy from each lbs of body fat per day. So if you have 50lbs of body fat, your body can at most use 1600 calories from stored fat. This is why fat loss gets much more difficult at lower bf%. Those last five lbs of fat you want to lose requires very close attention to your energy balance. If you have a calorie deficit larger than the amount your body can supply from fat stores, it will burn muscle or you'll simply feel exhausted as your body forces you to reduce your calorie expenditure.

Medfag here, “starvation” dieting is an absolute meme, but time restricted eating and fasting for decent blocks of time has a pretty profound effect on hormone levels and insulin sensitivity when combined with exercise. The caveat there is when you aren’t fasting, you need to be eating right (varied, seasonal veggies, solid and diverse protein sources, ample fats of all kinds, enough cholesterol to fuel hormone synthesis).

Just reread the post and it looks like I misunderstood the point, but “starvation mode” is mostly a meme too. The body prioritizes muscle preservation (within reason, everything is a bell curve) and fat metabolism because that’s exactly why fat stores exist. I won’t go into the biochemical pathways and signaling, but suffice to say that when your hormone levels and balance are where they should be (never the case in fats) your body will pull triglycerides from fat cells to be broken down and used as fuel (fat being by far the most potent fuel source available). When your blood is mostly high fructose corn syrup though, your insulin levels never drop, and insulin sensitivity will be extremely high. Until both of those are fixed (and the cascading effect of all other hormones being fucked) the body has an extremely hard time regulating the shuttling of lipids and glucose around. So for fats who destroyed their endocrinological profile through years of sugary abuse are correct in saying that it’s harder for them to regulate weight, but mostly it’s a cop out to not put in the work that it would take, because it certainly can be done.

I honestly didn't know that. My understanding was that the body doesn't necessarily prioritize one over the other. If you're active the body preserves muscle since it is actively being used (therefore necessary); whereas if you're largely sedentary the body doesn't play favorites (eliminating muscle conserves the energy that would otherwise go to upkeep).

No, you’re correct that utilizing muscle increases rate of preservation, but stripping protein chains out of muscle cells and burning them as fuel (gluconeogenesis) is *extremely* inefficient. It’s a ratio just like anything else, and that ration depends on hormonal balances and stores of each, but you’ll use mostly stored fat, some free proteins/aminos in the liver, and minimally already utilized proteins from muscles. Exercising obviously helps balance things and boosts that ratio in the more desirable direction.

Really there's no such thing as too much water. The problem is not enough salt (Na, K, etc). There's some factors that makes that vary among people. You lose salt sweating. You lose less through urinating. Most people already eat a sodium heavy diet.
Most people don't have to worry about depleting their salts to the point of it being dangerous. Heavy sweating over long periods of time (two-a-days football practice in the summer, extended strenuous outside work, etc) or forcefully drinking so much water (gallons on gallons) that you piss out all your sodium (certain frat hazings, rolling on Ecstasy) are situations where you might really want to supplement your intake
