How important is protein powder? I thought it's just used for easy supplementation of protein, but apparently it's important because whey is fast absorbing? According to an AthleanX video, most of the growth hormones released during sleep are released within 1 hour of sleep, and therefore you need to get fast absorbing whey before sleep to gain muscle? How true is this? Also, I've heard whey powder gives energy for workouts, is this true?

It's a supplement and you likely won't be able to minmax your protein intake to such an extent because our organisms are easily influenced by the environment.

Just eat your chicken or whatever you want.

Idk about the sleep stuff but after stressing the body (lifting) there's an anabolic window (time when protein gets used most efficiently) and if you hit a whey protein shake right after, you will get better gains. This is because you're giving your body a fast-acting protein right when it demands it

Isn't the the anabolic windows proven broscience?

That sentence doesn't make sense. But there is a debate and it means to it actually being a thing.

Whey protein gets absorbed fast. It has a high peak shortly after consuming but it drops off equally fast.
Casein protein gets absorbed slowly. It doesn’t have a high peak but doesn’t drop off that fast so your protein levels stay elevated for a longer period of time.
I’ve used casein in the beginning, then whey for the longest time. However, once I talked to a very knowledgeable guy at my supplement store, he told me whey isn’t ideal if you have a fast metabolism. He really knows his shit and recommend me beef protein, so that’s what I use now.

I think the current idea is that it exists but is a longer period of time than people originally thought. You don't need to slam a protein shake 5 minutes after you finish your workout, but you should get some protein within a couple of hours of your workout in order to maximize muscle recovery/growth.

tl;dr it's debatable and probably depends on the type of exercise but its not broscience, its been studied thoroughly

Thanks for the link to some actual research.

I started eating breakfast just so i could get 40g of protein in right away i basically eat 40g of protein every 4 hours, then a protein shake with bluberries, spinach, and flax milk before bed

>actual research
You know that research proved that ESP exists, right?
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21280961

If you believe something just because it appears in a paper you are absolutely brain-cucked.

So maybe it does

lmao

What beef protein do you use?

>If you believe something just because it appears in a paper you are absolutely brain-cucked
>proves point by posting a paper

Science is about discarding your biases, not about confirming them

The one from BioTech, which is my local supplement store. It’s fucking expensive, like everything from there but I still buy it there and not online out of respect for that one dude who really fucking knows his shit and always gives A+ advice.

yes, this is completely valid

ESP doesn't exist. If you think it does because a paper with flawed methodology "proved" it, then you are cucked beyond belief.

You don't know if or how the methodology is flawed, you just assume it is because that conclusion confirms your biases.

Why not just eat beef?

If you eat enough, regularly enough, to say in a positive nitrogen balance you don't need it.

Protein powders are just helpful, they're quick and easy and can give you a boost of the type of protein when you need it with very little hassle and proportionally low impact of your caloric intake; making them good for cutting and stuff.

You don't need them but they're handy.

Yeah, its bullshit. If you can, spread out your protein intake during the day but if you can't, just chug one or two shakes.

it's a source of protein like any other
you can not eat it at all or you can even get 100% of your protein just from whey protein powder. either will work

Studies have repeatedly shown that it doesn't matter when you take your protein, just that you get it. While all the individual effects on the microscale are observed and correlated with protein intake, on the macro scale it doesn't make a difference. Just get your protein, eat at a caloric surplus and lift hard.

Because I can’t and don’t want to eat that much beef?

What flavor are y'all snorting? I have french vanilla from ON and I hate it. It's okay when you're drinking it with water, but the after taste makes me want to vomit. Still gonna finish the drum though.

whey is purely convenience and saving money. as long as you buy cheap one from bulkpowder or myprotein, protein value is even cheaper than magerquark. its also faster, tastier. basically it is supposed to help you get to 200g a day because without that can be very hard

There is a window but its like 48hrs

natural chocolate from mp or the regular chocolate from bulkpowder are my favorites. chocolate is always great. I like it simple. tried blueberry once and it tasted awful. thats because all the flavors are extremely americanized fake shit. except for normal chocolate

"Do you need to eat protein after exercising?

It's a good idea, because it helps your muscles recover and grow.

Your muscles don’t care if the protein comes from a hard-boiled egg, glass of chocolate milk, or whey protein shake.

Whatever you choose, more isn’t better. You need only 10-20 grams of protein for your muscles."

>more isn’t better
wrong. its just diminishing return

How's the aftertaste on chocolate? I picked vanilla because I thought it'd be more versatile, but the smell and aftertaste aren't worth it.

aftertaste? there is none

there are benefits to slower absorbing proteins, casein is li terally more anabolic than whey during bed time because it keeps you less catabolic throughout the entire duration of your sleep whereas whey only does so for like 3 hours

meat is similar to casein in this effect and cheese protein is casein only, there is 0 need in getting protein powders.

except there is plenty of data that shows that the anabolic window exists, it's not that big of a deal if you don't eat right after eating but it's always a good idea to eat a soon as possible in order to make sure you recover from your training as fast as possible.
also the study on anabolic window was cited many times and published on the international journal of sports nutrition lmao
