Man, I’m on the younger end of millennial (25), and I’ve got friends a couple of years younger. This is annoyingly true. I’ve found that the ones who are most determined to shed all “traditional labels” and shit seem to have the most depression and mental health issues. I’ve had a few who I’ve gotten into fitness and good competitive hobbies, and they always end up a lot more satisfied in life. Conversely, I know a few more who were doing alright and picked up all the body positivity shit, gave up on fitness and goals generally, decided drag queens were inspirational, and now use Instagram as a platform to blog about either their depression/anxiety, or how it’s totally okay and “valid” (whatever the fuck that means now) to give up on things, and not do difficult shit under the guise of self-care.
Any of you zoomers reading this, don’t avoid good shit because it’s difficult. Aim to feel meaningful and satisfied, not happy. Don’t try to avoid all suffering, try to find the shit worth suffering for. Work out how the ideal version of yourself would act in a situation, then suck it up and do it.
