Deadlift is one of the lifts you cannot ego lift, half ass. It has to be done with proper form, and the user has to constantly refine that form to perfection.

What ever it is it's not muscle mass or aesthetics. Deadlifts are pretty much unheard of in strict bodybuilding circles, pros never do them anymore. RDLs/Good mornings are better options that you can do with higher reps without frying your CNS
