Is "barefoot" running a meme or is there any actual benefit/detriment from it?
It's a neat concept, running around without high-tech shoes, but I haven't found much that's conclusive for health benefits
Is "barefoot" running a meme or is there any actual benefit/detriment from it?
all forms of running are gay
its one of those 'we did it as cavemen so its healthier for is' mentalities.
the issue with barefoot running is that you can't run the same way you do with shoes, or else you'll fuck yourself up. thats why vibrams got such a bad rap, people were running in them heel-first like they would with tennis shoes and got hurt.
Barefoot running is worse for your feet and knees
Also humans have been wearing shoes for several hundred thousand years
Barefoot shoes are nice from what I've heard. If you want to try it keep in mind that you have to adjust your technique (not running heel first, shorter stride, lean forward etc)
If you don't run like a retard most of the impact should go into your calves though
See it as an accessory or variation, like the RDL to a DL. It builds up certain muscles and helps with form, but at certain paces, distances and grounds you're running on, you'll want a good cushioning. Also you want "high tech" barefoot shoes, as real barefoot is pointless and dangerous.
fivefingers are pretty comfortable but you have to deal with being 'that guy who wears toe shoes'
It increases calf/hamstring flexibility passively which was useful for me, tight hamstrings used to give me back issues.
That said I don't think its for everyone and idk if there's a scientifically ideal shoe, just wear what feels good for your body
I was referring to something like Xero Shoes for example. They don't have that distinctive look you mentioned
this is true, its fine on pavement or a track but once you get on gravel or off roads its fucking awful.
I don't run, but have used only barefoot shoes for 5 years. It has slowly fixed my flat and over pronating feet.
Is there a brand that anyone would recommend? I was looking at these Skinners sock shoes, they seem pretty well-received and inconspicuous
Our survival for millions of years is a meme concept. Keep running in your Nike-scientist approved Nikes.
Onitsuka tigers are pretty minimal support and are aesthetic AF
How so? I have flat feet (flexible-type) and barefoot shoes tend to just stress my ankle tendon and give me shin splints.
>Run barefoot
>Kill your knees
That wasn't smart.
Ive been barefoot running for 2 years and it unironically made all foot pain go away. For the first few months youll wake up and feel like your feet are broken tho. You’ll also never have to do calf isolations again
You literally cant heel strike when you run barefoot dummy.
Ancient people would be fine. Remember that the Greeks and Romans (pre Marian Reforms) fought barefoot. But modern people have softer feet because we are used to shoes
Heel striking is better for both knees and feet.
>Heel strike: impact goes into the knees
>Ball of the foot: impact goes to the calves
How exactly is it better?
Look it up
Barefoot running is extremely dangerous and there have been lawsuits about this against companies who endorsed shit like those toe shoes for running. We are not meant to run on concrete or hard surfaces. You will probably damage your bones and feet. Use shoes.
Worst possible answer. No one takes you seriously.
Running barefoot is not very smart. Running in barefoot shoes should be safe for most people as long as you don't run in them like you'd in regular running shoes
Same for me, but I gradually got used to them.
When I run barefoot, my heels hardly make contact with the ground
Instead I mostly use my upper half of foot to kind of slap myself up off the ground, kind of luck a duck using its webbed toes to swim
It feels good but looks weird
Here's the thing.
Before people started wearing hard soled shoes they walked forefoot first.
When you're wearing shoes you instinctively feel you can use the more effective walking method.
been running barefoot on the beach for like 2 years or so now and i get stronger than when i lifted weights. i do sprints at the football fields barefoot too, no better workout on earth imo. idk im done trying to convince fit how healthy and beneficial it is. no injuries and i eat whatever i want and i only get bigger and faster. my feet and knees are better than when i started.
>Shoes aren't natural, they're harmful! Run barefoot
>Medicine isn't natural, it's harmful! Die instead.
barefoot running goat workout, lol at people in a gym walking around in foam heels thinking their knees are healthy, then they run barefoot and 100 muscles get worked that have never been worked before and they think they are getting injured lol
But taking medicine in the absence of some specific abnormality/pathology they're used to address will invariably result in harm.
Running isn't healthy period.
>its fine on pavement or a track
It's not.
I tried it once and my soles got blackened beneat the first layer of skin from blood and dirt.
It makes your feet stronger. You probably won't give a shit since they don't need to be, what with modern shoes, but that's what it does.
It made my arches tighten up and I lost a shoe size too.
Oh, for the simple among you I should add that it can also fuck your feet up if you're a fucking window licking retard.
This, same goes for living.
I want gymcels to leave Jow Forums.
only do it if you want insane calves
>that guy who wears toe shoes
Fix that by also being that guy who deadlifts 500lbs
>be holistic, new age hippie garbage
>trade traditional religious concept of "purity" of soul for "purity" of body
>wacko for organic foods, free range chickens, holistic medicines, essential oils(?) and more "natural" approaches, like barefoot running
>contract HIV from a running trail in a san francisco suburb
>making everything political
Some people just want strong feet and calves.
post body
For performance and max athletic ability (I'm a track athlete in HS), stick to scientifically proven running shoes. For leisure, for sure go barefoot but RESEARCH PROPER FORM or else you will jack up your joints and tendons trying to run the same way you would with shoes.
definitely a meme my friend. leads to a ton of injuries because it turns out most of us are running in cities - if you run on grass 100% of the time it might be ok to do it though.
FPBP
Truth is that most Americans are far too fat to run w/o shoes.
>twintails
BREHS
>heel strike
>impact goes into the knees
If you're a fucking retard and not rotating from the heel onto the balls of your feet during the action maybe.
Heel strike is much more effective for long distance running.
The energy created from the strike of the heel is shifted to energy used to push off the palm of foot.
Opposed to pushing solely off the palms of the feet, which requires you to use more movement.
For speed running toes is the way to go, but you'll break your foot running long distance on your toes for sure.
Your feet are already JUST from wearing shoes the first 10 years of your life. You can run barefoot but you have to work up to it some and change your gate, form, etc.
you are asking this in a board that considers running 5k an achievement
So the. Should I run a mile barefoot for then first time ?
I run almost exclusively on blacktop and sidewalks, and have used both minimalist and toe shoes. You notice immediately that something is wrong if you run in them like you would normal running shoes. Now, I can't say that this type of shoe or the running style you use with them offers any benefit, but you can 100% avoid injury with them if you do it right.
Anecdotally, for what it's worth, I found slow paced long distance jogs to be much easier with the ball-of-foot running style. Wrecked my shit until my calves and feet got used to it, but once they conditioned, I found it superior and it felt far more natural. Again though, this is entirely my own experience.
