They are metal core with a smooth, slippery rubber sheath that is too loose and thus spins somewhat freely when you try to hang from it. Absolute nightmare trying to grip it especially with any sweat at all. I can easily rep out sets of 12 on a good bar but I fall off of these around 8-9. I don't get how this garbage gets designed, manufactured, bought, shipped, and assembled without anybody stopping to think what a bad bar it is.
