Trump won because he's been a well known political centrist for decades, whereas Hillary has been known for nothing other than corruption for decades.

It seems to be fashionable to demean Trump's political credentials when he's one of the most qualified presidents you have ever had. It's rare that someone with such a range of business skills, and without any shady past or ties to corruption gets involved in politics, which I suspect is why there was so much pushback from politicians who were previously friends with him. They knew he wasn't one of them and they couldn't control him.

Most people don't have the time to investigate things themselves and form their own thought out opinions, they'll go with whatever seems most morally acceptable at first glance. There was a brilliant column in a dutch newspaper by a belgian philosopher who wrote about how one shouldn't make jokes about islam, intersectionality, white fragility, etc. It was satire, as tyhe writer himself explained later, but it seemed almost noone read it that way. Satire and reality often can't be distinguished anymore.
