Can any dog owners here comment on what owning a dog is like? I'm a socially isolated robot and i've been thinking about acquiring a small dog (pic related) as a way of feeling less lonely. Basically the way I see it is if I have a dog around I'll at least feel a presence which will make me less lonely. Will it work?

Pugs are awesome personality wise, they arent inherently yappy and and fairly low matinence as far as walking and shit like that. They do have a host of medical issues though. So it will cost you in that regard or if you wont pay for that you end up losing a chill ass dog you have grown attached to. I recommend though, worth the bs
The size of the dog definitely matters, small dogs are good for lap-sitting and what not so if you're trying to combat loneliness that's a good choice. They are hard work though, while training them they will piss you off. Never ever abuse your dog or they will never forgive you. They are a commitment, they need attention, to be feed 1 - 3 times a day, to be walked/given exercise, to be isolated as little as possible, be taken out to piss throughout the day, and to be given head scritches and treats when they earn them. If you do all of that your dog will love you and in my personal experience they will make you less lonely but it's still not the same as human contact. At first it will take you a while to probably get attached, give it like a month and if you suddenly find yourself just enjoying seeing them then that's a good sign. Those feelings will fill in some potholes of loneliness. I prefer big dogs though. If there's a dog park in your area you can also take your dog there and try to chat up the people there. Be wary of bigger digs though and to not let anything happen to it that could traumatize it.
What does the average pug owner pay out in vet bills each year? The main reason I haven't gotten a dog yet is because of the cost. I'm a pretty frugal person and I normally don't do things like this but IDK a dog feels like something more than consumer bullshit. Feels like bringing another being into my life; really, it's the company I'm most interested in.
>to be isolated as little as possible
Does going to work cause emotional distress to dogs? This is something I've actually already thought about. I know dogs are social animals so it seems like maybe 8 hours a day alone could be distressing to them. On the other hand I've heard that dogs sleep way more than people so maybe my dog could just nap while I'm at work?
Just adopt a smaller dog the fees are usually cheap if they don't give it to you for free, mixed breed dogs are healthier and generally live longer.
>Inb4 how do you know the dog won't grow up into a giant?
Just get an adult.
get a cat. dogs are trash.
its basically the same thing except you don't have to walk your cat 3-5 times a day.
also cats don't bark at literally everything they see like dogs do. cats are chill af and take care of themselves. get a female cat, male cats will end up spraying all over the place once they get older
It probably does a bit at first but it's necessary for them to get used to having to spend some time alone. Backyards where they can run around and not escape are preferred and if you train them to playing with their toys that's good. If you're really worried about it I would get two dogs since small dogs are super easy to handle. They will keep each other occupied while you're gone. And yeah they will most likely just chill after you leave once you teach them not to whine and to not tear up furniture (most dogs come like that but some will fuck up your shit and you gotta train them to only bite their toys)

Aren't cats even MORE prone to tearing up furniture than dogs are?
>bes buddy
>sleeps beside me while i play vidya
>gives me a reason to leave the house
>dog licks heal my soul
>cuddles me at night
>naps with me when i am tired
>chases a ball around the yard very cutely
Does your dog sleep with you inna bed or does he have his own sleeping area?
sleeps in my bed. some people don't like it but i do. it's way easier with a small dog than a big dog.
I got a dog and he doesn't like me.
He likes other people.
>This thing used to be a wolf
Do you give him treats and take him out on walks?
>Do you give him treats and take him out on walks?
Yes, and he's a well behaved dog, but he just dislikes me.
He loves getting attention from other people.
i have both a cat and a dog. ama
Time to get another dog
If you never had a dog before you should consider getting an older one from a pound or something. Some of them are already amazingly well trained. I may be biased because I've had dogs from puppies and adopted ones. Maybe I'm just shit at raising puppies but the adopted ones always end up growing on me a bit more with their personality and they're probably better behaved than what I could have done if I got them as pups.
It's really an inconvenience because they're always dependent on you 24/7 and always there right by your side. You have to revolve your entire schedule around taking care of it. Small dogs can be okay, personally I started to hate owning dogs once I got smaller ones instead of larger guard dogs. Although it's amusing to train them to try to murder the shit out of varmints and stuff like that.
this is the cutest most pure post ive ever seen, i love your dog and im happy he makes you happy
I like having him around, nobody has ever really liked me so it's not something I expect, but it's nice to take care of somebody.
Scratching posts are a thing, they'll leave your furniture alone. I like dogs and cats, each one has their pros and cons. If user gets a female cat, get that bitch fixed asap; most animal shelters do it which is why there's an adoption fee in most cases. Same with female dogs.
Dogs suffer sometimes from anxiety when their people aren't around, which is why they tear up the furniture. Cats do it for nail maintenaince(it sheds layers of their claws, like a human trimming his fingernails.)
Small dogs can be super clingy and want to crawl up your ass and be around you 24/7, which is something I don't personally mind, cuz he's my fuzzy little buddy. And taking him out 3-4 times a day so he can piss and shit is good exercise for both of us. Hopefully user can just hook him up in the yard or has a fenced in area he can let the little guy run around in. Getting a cat that's a bit on the older side and doesn't want to go out much is a good way to keep them alive longer. Having a bro-cat is one of the best things ever. Had a few of them myself, one of them actually fought a dog that was attacking me, was pretty awesome and terrifying to see, because he sprang onto the big doggy's head and started tearing up his nose, biting his face and trying to claw his eyes out. Dog never knew what hit him. Went back in the house afterward and he plopped in my lap like nothing happened and demanded his pettings. I miss that orange bastard.
One of my cats ignores the scratching post and tears up my mattress. She also eats too fast and barfs a little on it, probably once every 2 weeks. I don't mind since I just wipe it off and I'm used to the smell. Also, she catches the roaches that come into my room. I've never let her outside since I brought her home, except in a carrier to the vet once a year, because outdoor cats destroy ecosystems, bring in fleas, and die years earlier from random accidents.
When my kitty is gone, I'm calling it quits and taking the last train to Clarksville. Ain't no point livin without my baby. She acts like a dog and rolls over for tummy rubs and the other cat will actually drape herself on my arm and sleep. There's no living without them. I'm glad I have them in my life, so OP, whether you get a dog or a cat, just know there's a good chance you're gonna make a real friend there and it could be the best decision you make, if you're a real lonely fellow.

There is the flattening surgery. The Vet needs to take a frying pan to it's face, to give it that natural pug look.
Please don't do it if you live alone and have a job. The dog will be spending 1/3 of its life alone, waiting for you to come home.
You can be a foster home for dogs, having them for weeks/months until they find a permanent home. You get to know so many cute dogs with different personalities. So many people insist on only having ''perfect'' 8 week old puppies and it's retarded.
Dogs are happy, dogs are chill
Dogs are servants, they have no free will
Dogs are cute, dogs like snacks
Dogs like scratches on their belly and their backs
Dogs like walks, dogs like to play
Dogs like running and rowling in the hay
Dogs can growl, dogs can guard
Dogs go fierce in the kitchen and in the yard
But dogs are soft and dogs are kind
Dogs like company and not being left behind
Dogs are loyal and keep close friends
My dog is a good boy and i'll love him until the end
