Firefighters as a career is going away. In Japan they're all volunteers nowadays, and honestly it should be that way in the US as well... there's no point in paying these expensive city/county employees to just sit around watching TV and eating candy. Sometime in the 90s they were wise to brand themselves as these healthnuts because I think they already saw the writing on the wall that as fire prevention technology improves, their jobs are mostly pointless.

Firefag here: most fire departments are maintaining their relevance by responding to medical calls, performing state required fire inspections, and also being the catch all "fix it" crew for the city. A lot of the job is helping the city not have a fire in the first place. But with materials the way they are nowadays, a house can be fully involved in several minutes vs a half hour, like they did 40+ years ago. But yes, can confirm lots of fat fucks and it's a fucking disgrace.

They respond to a lot of medical codes and accidents you absolute retard. Just jump off the roof of your house and land on your head the world is better off

Ontario is a cool Dept but they have a lot of PC shit going on according to my friend who's and LT up there.
It's a pretty decent job for any career Dept. In a metro area.

FF/Paramedic since 2014, my starting pay was $57,871 +$9,000 Paramedic bonus per year. I work a 1-2-1-4 schedule. I respond to an average of 6 calls per 24hr shift, mostly concentrated 10a-10p, with the occasional light night tones. I can get about 72hrs of OT a month with 8 and 12hr shifts available for coverage and demand. My first year on the Dept. I made $91,000 US.

It's a pretty good job. It's not easy at home life of you're a husband or dad with young kids, but the work is good, the job is fun, and there's a sense of unity and brotherhood here and everywhere you go with other FFs, LEOs and EMS personnel. You have to be a unique kind of person to want to do it though.

But it's not a sudden Jow Forums godsend. The requirements for the candidate physical agility test knock out anyone who's a gigantic fatty or a skinnyfat, and the intimidation factor pushes a lot of people away. The academy is hard of you aren't at least in moderately good shape, and coming out of the academy you're definitely going to be on track to be fairly fit. A few years on the job soaking in station diet and watching Netflix, of you're department doesn't keep you to a PT schedule, and you're bound to pack on the pounds. My Dept. Encourages daily PT and has a small gym with enough space for the entire shift to work out together, and most young guys do, but some other depts. do not encourage such behavior for fear of injury not on call, and don't encourage or enforce daily PT, and you can tell.

Firefighters are probably on average more fit under 40 than most other jobs but beyond that heart disease, ESRD, hepatomegaly, and cancers are far more common in FF populations due to steady diets of booze, tobacco, PVC smoke and dietary failure.
