The main government programs for foreigners in Japan (JET and ALT) place you out in the middle of fucking nowhere, far away from tokyo or osaka. The vast majority of people aren't shut-ins. Yes, they are a very large minority, but still a minority. Basic politeness isn't being "extremely formal". It's normal for two strangers to start talking in polite language, but even acquaintances will talk in casual language, barring other social barriers like an age/gender/social class gap.

I paid less rent for my cell in Tokyo, 10 minutes from one of the major stations, than I did for a shitty suburban flat 20 minutes by bus to the city center in my country. If you are willing to live in a small space, it's very affordable.

Hiragana and Katakana is really not that hard, I can easily distinguish now whether a character is hiragana, katakana, or kanji. Lots of Japanese people don't even know that much kanji because their computers and phones create kanji for them.
I like the idea of a culture being more formal with distinguished rules that you know to follow rather than having this way of talking where everybody creates their own personal rule system and gets pissed off when other people don't speak to them the way they want them to. In this system, everybody just has one set of rules to follow that you all are aware of and expected to abide by.
