Now I'm at 225 1x5 for bench and my dips have more or less flatlined. Just goes to show that there's less carry over between the two than you might expect.

are sets of 10 considered high rep for dips? you were doing weighted dips when you started off benching 135?

yes dips are shit loads easier. I dip 40kg + 105 body weight for 3x10 but bench is 110kg for 5x5

Twelve sets of ten (120 reps total) would generally be considered on the higher end of things, esp. at a 200 lb bodyweight. My training basically went get in the gym because it's cold, see how heavy I can get my weighted dips (because it's the exercise I'm most familiar with)--> hit 60 lbs added for 8 immediately--> switch over to SS--> start with 135 lbs

Based on how I felt, I probably could've gone up to 145 or 150 lb to start with but 1 plate is a good clean starting position. Also, I'd vary the rep and set schemes so there were times when I was doing 20+ dips per set (but with fewer sets) before I joined a gym.
