It is for training. You have to be pretty fit. After the first year or so you have only slightly more impetus to stay fit than the average pleb. (One or two fitness tests a year in the UK).
The training fitness program is very crossfit. Lots of training for time but it does pay to have a powerlifting background you get tested on deadlifts and bag carrys and things.
