And unlike most limp-wristed writers, he hit the gym hard. "Sun and Steel" is a poetic meditation that captures the emotions of exercise and straining to remake yourself and get better in a way that someone who's never touched a barbell can't put into words. It's also pretty short and readable. Highly recommend it.

As someone who did a course on Japanese lit at uni (not a very good course, mind you) I still hold the opinion that most Japanese authors are horrible memers who liked writing (badly) about women/men to satisfy their weird fucking fetishes and urges. Anime and manga came from somewhere, after all. Having said that though, while Mishima absolutely fits the above, I think Yukoku is a fucking stellar example of how to execute build-up in narrative. You know how the story ends from the get-go because he spoils you, but you don't expect the level of brutality it will culminate in, pretty based. His approach to Jow Forums was also pretty healthy, even if he was a delusional closeted homo.
Read Siddharta and Steppenwolf instead though.
