This is all truth is now. Politics, philosophy, science have no longer got any tangible relationship to reality anymore. It is all about how cool and sexy you look. That is all. If your side looks cool, masculine and sexy then you are right.

Logic is dead.

that's how neoliberal capitalism functions *sniffs* aesthetics and marketing are what decides the value of ideas *sniff*

You have proven my point.
You have proven my point.

People have nothing to say except: YOU LOOK UGLY/FAT/UN-MASCULINE.
I think this trend started with the fedora meme and the implosion of the atheist online community circa 2013/2014.

It is true that a lot of online atheists were just dumb and pretentious teenagers, but the criticism just descended into laughing at peoples looks and poor fashion choices. It is like people have forgotten how retarded that argument is.

Would you rather believe something true but look like a pretentious fat loser or believe in something false and look like a masculine, cool, strong well dressed badass?

>Would you rather believe something true but look like a pretentious fat loser or believe in something false and look like a masculine, cool, strong well dressed badass?
The second one.
Either way, overall I think you're right but this is by no means a new trend. Politics has always been defined more by the ad homeniem than actual arguments since (and likely predating) the enlightenment.

*scratches nose* Huchwy do lefdishds follokh me? I am against them in hekhvry way *sniffles*. I am a neo Hegelian and oppose *rubs nose* marxshism in all its formsh.

Eh. There are periods of human history dominated by reason and periods of human history dominated by spectacle. Listening to a lot of people discuss the 'post-truth' era makes me think otherwise.

I can't speak for yanks but here in Britbongistan politics has become heavily aestheticised. Back in the 80s the whole Thatcher vs Socialism thing was heavily connected to people's lived reality e.g. 'I am going on strike as a miner because my pay is shit.' or 'I am voting for Thatcher because I am sick of the miners striking and there being power cuts.'
With Brexit, people's decisions and arguments seem to have no connection with anything tangible at all. It's all about hating the liberal-lefty posh, effeminate Londoners and their globalist beliefs or hating the backwards fat white English racist dinosaur who still believes in the Nation-state etc... It's all about who is fat; who is dresssed well, who speaks in a a certain way, who doesn't like change and who does.

My mother told me she met old dinner ladies who voted for brexit because they hated iphones and wanted ships back in the harbour and wanted it to be just like when they were young again in the 70s.

Political persuations seem to have less connection to tangible reality now than they did in the past.

I don't know why.

It didn't change from back then, mentally we're all basically cavemen.

People definitely talked about politics back in the day. I'm not saying it wasn't tribal and that people didn't have irrational belief, but their beliefs were still connected to tangible effects of policies.

In 1980, a 50 year old white man would vote for Reagan as a backlash against the Dems turning for civil rights in the 60s, or becuase he is scared of nuclear war with the USSR or because he thought homosexuals were a danger to society or because the oil cirsis appeared to demonstrate Carter was incomepetent with the economy.

In 2016 a 20 year old white man would vote for Donald Trump because fat blue haired social justice warrior are fat ugly, self-righteous and disgusting; they make him feel angry when they say stuff like death to all white men etc.. He likes all the dank Trump memes and the idea of being a ripped right wing muscular alpha. He like the fascist aesthetics and the classical european culture and the aesthetic of masculinity. He likes the bombastic comedy of Trumps chest beating strength and manliness.

I fail to see the fundamental differences between your scenarios. Both voted for braindead assholes for braindead reasons and other people vote the other candidate for other brsindead reason.
I'm sure there were enough people who voted for Reagan just because they thought that niggers won't get uppity then just as there are enough Trump voters who really believed that he will bring back the industry instead of trade wars, young Trump voters are a minority.

I just like a couple of his ideas on technology
