It never existed actually. Humans are tribal and even in structured societies raised kids in groups, a la public or boarding school. Millions of years of mostly polygamous evolution vs a couple thousand years of forced monogamy to prevent betas from uprising. Evolution doesn't filter for monogamy (neither does forced monogamy), it's actually the exact opposite, the most likely people to pass on their genes are polygamous people, especially in a monogamous society. As much as I would love humans to be monogamous, we are inherently polygamous unfortunately. The only reason we have institutionalized monogamy (and even that isn't universal, see islam) is to prevent the masses of betas from uprising against the few alphas. That's quite literally the only reason. Just look into some online dating statistics. Women go for the top 20% of men while completely ignoring the remaining 80%.
