read the context, Christ is referring to the faith that Peter displays as the rock on which He will build the church, not Peter himself

Here is the full passage:

[20] Then he commanded his disciples, that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ."
Clearly Christ was referring to Peter since he addressed Peter.

the bit where Christ asks, who do people say i am, then who do you say i am, and then Peter answers for the group saying 'You Are the Christ...'
that's the object to which Christ is referring - the fact that His disciples know Him to be Christ - that's the object of faith which The Lord builds His church on.. that they know Him to be God
