My best friend has been mean to me a lot for no reason for the past few months and it's making me feel like shit.

You said you understand if they made a statement similar to that, so you're at the very least neutral (as in, ok) regarding it. You might expect to be attacked, sure, but if you went on the most malicious forum on the planet and started saying that they should adopt a more altruistic approach, you'd also be attacked. If you think people should be treated "mean" because they said such things then there's clearly some level of personal contradiction with that viewpoint.
