The protein leather is incredibly durable and is indistinguishable from real leather to me. Have had them for years and the pads are still good as new.

Aha, that'd be the Sennheiser HD 650s (Driver matched to the highest of standards)! The only driver matched, best TOTL headphone by humanity. As every knowledgeable audio enthusiast should know, nowhere does it officially state by Sennheiser that they're driver matched (Hence, gross!)

And no, you're probably alright unless it's defective or something. DACs aren't that hard.
If you don't have an amp, that makes a difference, DACs not so much.
But headphones make the most difference. If you don't have HD600, I'd suggest getting that.

Random tip: to make perfect transparencies, blow the image up fuckhuge with waifu2x, which produces sharp upscaled lineart, then extract your transparency from the background, then downscale back to original size. This will produce a much more precisely extracted transparency than simply working with the original image.
If your background is plain enough, you can actually produce rather perfect transparencies simply using the magic wand tool like this.

What if I'm willing to swap out the pads on the M40X? My main concern is audio quality at a relatively low price point. An extra $50AU either way is no issue, and I've got a lot of paranoia surrounding Aliexpress which is the only place I can get the Takstars.

aliexpress is ok. they're like chinese amazon. better than taobao at least. If you don't want them to have your credit card data, which is understandable, there are some available on amazon. Not sure about their authenticity though
