Not everyone can afford or has the infrastructure around them for 4G speeds. In some rural areas I got down to 3 and even 2G. Also it's just nice having the capability to store that much in your hands.
The only problem is the transfer rate over USB. Need more phones with a USB-C
It's not actually a constant drain. Even if you downloaded everything as 320kbps CBR MP3 that's only around 2.4 MiB per minute, which only takes one or two seconds to download over LTE.

It still adds up day after day. If you genuinely treat your phone as a disposable appliance then its not a big deal, but I like to keep things for more than a calendar year.
