5G will allow cellphone providers to sell home internet packages that are competitive with existing wired ISPs. Add in Ol' Musky's Starlink services, and we will be seeing a lot more competition & choices for internet service in 5 years or so.

its going to be shit tho because they will still fuck it up with carrier nat. only wired connections give a real ip that can be reached from another device.

main keyword is virtualization. you take a base station and move whatever you can out of it to "the cloud". this should make base stations cheaper and the software easier to deploy and update. if everything goes right, you'll be able to add thousands of new small base stations. less traffic per base station == better bandwidth for single user. now you just have to have fast handover protocol and maybe even interwork with wifi and you're set for mobile users. then you just have to handle all the "IoT" shit, industrial automation, vehicle-to-x, etc.

5G has the potential to replace wired connections, to the point where wireless carriers and traditional ISPs would be directly competing with each other.

Google Fiber has also shown a lot of interest as ISPs cant use their semitic lawyers to cockblock expansion of their business

Telecom engineer here. I'm a PhD student working on antennas arrays specifically for 5G.

First of all the current frequency spectrum cannot handle the amount of users even with all the techniques deployed so far for channel separation and compression.

So there will be a leap in frequencies, going over 6GHz. Currently the talks are about 24.25-29.5 GHz band for the whole world. Each country is setting different bands because there's still no real ITU-T specifications.

Overall latency, speeds and user capacity will be improved. It's a much needed jump, similar to what we saw from the 1G analog signal to 2G.

As an engineer, are you at all concerned with such high frequencies blanketing us everywhere? Do you think that your biologist friends would say there is some sort of risk to human health?

It doesn't, the plans are for cells so small that the loss will actually be beneficial since you won't have interference from adjacent cells.
Buildings will be have their own cells and sub-6 GHz frequencies will be used in certain cases. Those are the ones currently being used for LTE + a few different ones.
Pathing and reflections will be taken into account by your device and cells so it's optimized.
Overall, don't worry about the quality of your signal.

Considering that the power that's around us is so low, I doubt that it will have a big effect, since attenuation will be much higher on this new band.
Admittedly, I'm no biologist, so my opinion is centered on how waves work. Which I mean that the higher frequency and low power would just affect the very surface of your skin and not penetrate enough and that the power is so low that it wouldn't do anything to your cells.
But like I said, I'm not a biologist and studies are needed in this subject for the new bands.

Antennas are weird things. Believe it or not, this design works and I'm using a FR4 substrate to try to make it as low cost as possible.
But I don't think I will achieve the bandwidth I want with it.

assuming the thinnest available thickness of 0.8 mm, you've got two conductor plates which are at least 2 mm away from your excitation pad with no electrical connection. I reckon this'll get you -20 dBi at best.
