CPU >i3 8100 - Bare minimum gaming >R3 2200G/R5 2400G - If you aren't buying a GPU >i5 8400 - Best value for gaming >R5 2600/x - Good for multithreaded work >i7 8700k/R7 2700x - Best high-end gaming/mixed usage on a non-HEDT platform OR wait for intel 9th gen (est. release November) >Threadripper/Used Xeon - HEDT
RAM >8GB - Enough for most gaming use >16GB - Standard for heavy use >32GB - If you have to ask, you don't need this >CPUs benefit from fast RAM; 2933MHz+ is ideal
Graphics cards >wait for RTX 2000 if you are rich >Avoid cheap MODELS ie MSI Armor (Mk2 is ok), Gigabyte G1/Wf, ASUS dual, and others which have small heatsinks and low quality fans UNLESS they are much cheaper 1080p >RX 570/580 /w Freesync or 1060 6GB are standard 1080p 60fps+ options >1050Ti or RX560 for lower settings, or older games >GTX 1070 if seeking higher FPS /w a high hz monitor 1440p >Avoid Vega since Nvidia has sales now >1070Ti/1080 /w a 75+ hz monitor >GTX 1080Ti if seeking higher FPS /w a high hz monitor 4K >1080Ti medium/high settings >2080Ti
Storage >Consider getting a larger SSD (better GB/$) instead of small SSD & large HDD >2TB HDDs are barely more $ than 1TB >M.2 is a form factor, NOT a performance standard

Not him, but I think the idea is that paging kills performance way less with hbm2 than gddr5. Makes sense, haven't tested it myself. >I'd really recommend it if you can afford it I can afford it in a sense, but it's more than I want to pay. I'm in a slightly unusual spot... I can justify the 4K screen since I can use it productively too, but there's only so much money I can reasonably spend on frivolities like graphics cards given my current budget.
Curious to hear opinions from anyone who plays at >1440p but
Henry Nelson
MSI X470 Gaming Plus, or the Gigabyte Aorus Ultra Gaming motherboard? I am looking for cheaper end x470 motherboards and am between these two, any preference for one or another?
Benjamin Brown
This convoluted reasoning for lowballing me on my used 1070 is funny. It's actual meme material. There is a $700 difference between the msrp of a 2950X and 2400G. Given that I can find a Threadripper $850 new, $150-$700 = negative $550. Because it is a used CPU %20 off in my opinion is fair game. There for -550 - 110 = you give me the 2400G and $660?
You left out some words and context, such as >theoretically As in, if you had infinite RAM than HBCC gives you effectively infinite VRAM. Paging doesn't kill performance the way it does with other GPU memory controllers.
>Avoid Vega since Nvidia has sales now Retarded OP again
Is it true 8400 already chokes on some current high end games like battlefield?
Charles Jones
Thoughts on 2400G now and buying a discrete GPU later, vs buying both later?

i'm building my first pc after putting it off for about 10 years (don't ask). having put it off for so long, i'll be spending quite a bit of time working through my massive backlog of games, so playing the newest games at the highest settings really isn't a priority of mine at this point. with that being said, if i do play something newer, i don't really want to play it on potato mode, but i am willing to forego the newest components for a better display or for some other good reason. aside from playing games, i would like for it to have a secondary function of working as a media player. i haven't read up on this in a long while, so i don't know if it's better to have a purpose-built media player or if it would be fine doing it on an existing system, but ideally i would be able to play 4k movies onto a tv or a compatible 4k monitor if i got one.
i am leaning towards micro atx. are the cases like pic related good?
>tfw I finally get my 360mm AIO Ambient went down to 35c from 45c which probably meant I setup the H240X incorrectly somehow. More cores is never worse though. Assuming you're not running into an IPC issue. At worst it'll allow you to run more shit or not stress the CPU as much (which usually means lower temps overall).
Currently on a Ryzen 1600 + GTX 1060 setup but I want to upgrade for high refresh monitor/gaming
Should I get a 1080p 144Hz + I don't know what GPU or a 1440p 144Hz + 1080 Ti? I feel like I've backed myself into a corner with Ryzen.
Caleb Adams
any reason you're not considering Ryzen 2? It seems a little silly to buy Ryzen 1 right now with Ryzen 3/Zen 2 just around the corner
Brody Sullivan
Silverstone makes good cases, these ones are on the larger side though for a living room PC. Look into mITX cases and motherboards. Pretty much anything will play 4k video these days but I think on Windows only Intel and Nvidia allow netflix and amazon prime 4k decoding. $800-1000 for pc will give you a really powerful machine for all your 2010-2018 games.
Daniel Martin
There are benchmarks showing that the 2600x and 2700x do better since it's more CPU heavy
Owen Campbell
>>Avoid Vega since Nvidia has sales now >Retarded OP again Given that a 1080 costs $70 less for a non meme vega 56 currently on pcpp you are the retard. Only happens in 1-2 games but doesn't mean it will stutter, just a slight fps decrease. In battlefield any cpu will choke on a big map with a bunch of shit going on no matter what. 2400g is an awful buy you can buy a 2600 for a little bit more. Like OP says only buy it if you aren't buying a GPU. Both are shit
Alexander Wright
>Just got a 2700x for a new build after getting back into PC gaming >New CPUs are right around the corner Like fuckin seriously...
Brayden Miller
look at the raven htpc models, theyre quite nice. Htpcs get quite hot, so ensure the gpu has double fans (double check if it fits the case in question). cpu cooling is quite important so try to get an AIO - it should help drop temps to high 60s/low 70s.
Elijah Clark
AMD is supporting AM4 until 2020 anyways. Zen 2 is probably not even until 2019.
Kayden Morris
How "future proof" is a 1070ti/1080 for 1080p/144Hz gaming? 1080 Ti is overkill for it.
Parker Foster
144hz isn't futureproof whatever resolution you're looking at
Cameron Sanchez
if the leaked benchmarks are to be believed, just get the 20 series
Nicholas Stewart
is cooling a major concern for mITX?
Caleb Gonzalez
What are the leaked benchmarks?
Joseph Harris
30% performance compared to 10 series
Andrew Ramirez
Alright so my old PC died like a month ago and after I saved a little money I want to build a new one. Here's my question, what CPU at the moment will be the most future proof? I'm just gonna use it for gayming only and I don't really wanna upgrade it for a long while and also I don't want to wait for the new Intel's CPUs. I still have my old GTX 970 that I'm willing to change in the very near future.
Aaron Hall
what's the best hardware for a 500-600 linux build
Dylan Fisher
ryzen 2600
Jeremiah Hughes
this isn't the slim noctua tho
Brayden Taylor
Show me $330 1080 new, retard.
Yes. Most game benchmarks are graphics benchmarks and don't stress the CPU as much as real gameplay with AI or multiplayer does. See: youtube.com/watch?v=6DO60ajSpAo
Alexander Brooks
I was actually considering either 2700X or 8700K. Like I said I want them to last me a while.
Matthew Scott
Well with 2700x you can still update it in 2020/2021. 8700k is final cpu you are going to get for that socket.
Parker Wright
Yeah, I know about that, and that's why I'm not really sure. As far as I can see 8700k has better performance in games right now, but being able to upgrade to Zen 2 if seems good too, I just don't know if I'm gonna do that. Maybe if AMD really takes the cake
Luke Morales
Cheapest 1080: $430 Cheapest non shit model vega: $485 Even the most dogshit model is more expensive than a 1080
Lmao, how does it feel to be always wrong?
Easton Evans
Is Ryzen 7 1700 good for gaming?
Nicholas Morgan
Well you could upgrade to zen 2+ after 2 years. You would get good price for 2700x even then.
Tyler Sanders
Mediocre, 2700x is better.
Ethan Reyes
>CPU BENCHMARKS ARE FAKE jesus, that's a new one. Put your name back on so I don't have to read your sperging.
Xavier Martin
9900k will work on the same socket.
Jayden Thompson
Get a used IBM Thinkpad and spend rest on programming socks, HRT and sextoys.
Chase Hughes
I think by the time I would like to upgrade, 9900k could be a little outdated
Justin Phillips
By the time 9900k becomes outdated AMD will have another socket.
Grayson Wright
You probably right. I would just like the most for my buck right now and for as long as possible. I had my Phenom II x6 1055T for almost 6-7 years
Austin Fisher
Yeah it's only $500-600 though
Elijah Thomas
I'm about to drop $500 on a 1080p G-Sync 144Hz monitor how much will I regret this?
>$500 for a 1080p g-sync monitor when you can get a 1440p 144hz IPS for $300 You should really just donate your money to charity. Give it to the more deserving and hopefully less retarded.
Eli Taylor
I plan to upgrade it soon. I would buy a 1080Ti now but it's not worth it for 1080p, and it's not worth upgrading to a 1070 or 1080.
Grayson Smith
The cheapest 1440p 144Hz G-Sync is $500 here and it's really not worth it with a 1060. This is CAD, by the way.
Jace Baker
not him but feel free to post a link to that monitor
Elijah Stewart
>By the time you want to upgrade to a 1080Ti, they're all sold out >RTX 2080 still ridiculously expensive because of the stupid 34fps gimmick >By the time 7nm RTX 3080 comes out, it's BTFO by Navi kek. Top decisions.
>Mbest MB279QR144 QHD 2560x1440 144Hz AMD FreeSync 27" Gaming Monitor For fastest response time IPS(well AHVA) and lowest input latency one. It's $340 on Amazon but I've seen it cheaper both on Amazon and elsewhere. Ebay seller might still have them new for about $300. >Pixio PX277 27 inch 144Hz WQHD 2560 x 1440 Wide Screen Bezel Less Display Professional IPS (AH-VA) AMD Radeon FreeSync Certified 1440p Gaming Monitor For HDR. $400.
Lincoln Morgan
is october a good month to start buying parts and building?
Ryan Davis
I might just upgrade to 1080Ti+1440p. I just know my CPU is shit so there's really no point right now, and I don't want to upgrade CPU until Zen 2. That's really the only thing holding me back.
This is the 1440p I was talking about. I don't know if they ship to the US but it's about $400 USD.
what do you use to stress test RAM? also what for your drives?
Benjamin Hill
What’s the best cooler for a budget limit of $70 Australian?

About to build a PC, I have wooden floors at home - anything else I need to do to avoid static?
Xavier Lopez
Why do sites still bench enthusiast cards at 1080p? Who is buying a 1070- or even a 1060- and using it with anything less than a 1440p display?
And why do they bench at ultra when it doesn't generally make sense to play at that? It's like 10+ fps less in most games and it looks exactly the same.
Jaxon Bell
Because anything above 1080p that hits a GPU bottleneck and all the cards basically end up hitting the same frames. >And why do they bench at ultra Because it's the highest quality setting. Depending on the resolution (4k for example) they may set the settings to low, but for 1080p you'll almost never see a bottleneck due to graphical settings outside of resolution.
Chase Hall
pcpartpicker.com/list/TtnQw6 What you guys think of this build for gaming, streaming and video editing? I just cannot choose between Fractal Design - Define S and Corsair Carbide 330R
Evan Powell
Maybe the information I'm expecting to receive from these benchmarks isn't the information they're intending to provide. If I'm checking benchmarks, it's because I want to know how good a card is at running games. In particular, I want to see how well it runs the games I want to play, at the settings I want to play them at. Obviously everyone is different, so as a representation I expect to see various popular games being run at the kind of resolution and settings most people would play them at.
So if they bench cards A and B at High 1440p and the result is identical performance, that is not a problem that needs to be solved by changing to ridiculous settings. That's useful information. It tells me "A and B are equivalent, buy whichever is cheaper/whichever has the right kind of adaptive sync/whichever comes with free games".
For what it's worth I'm very happy with my Define S. It was a breeze to build in, the cable management is great (and I never normally care about that), and I like the front io/buttons/LEDs placement. It was reasonably priced and thermals are good. That's everything I want in a case. Love the rear HDD mounting mechanism, I never want to deal with traditional drive bays again.
It's intended for the watercooling crowd so with just my basic small air cooler in there it looks pretty empty. That doesn't bother me (more space=better airflow anyway) but if you're really picky about aesthetics you might want to keep that in mind.
>Why do sites still bench enthusiast cards at 1080p Because Nvidia cards tend to be better at 1080p compared to AMD ones at 1440p. If they tested at 1440p, that would make AMD look too good.
Would it be dumb to buy a 1070, 1080 or 1080Ti now with the 20 series so close to being released?
Hudson Smith
I this mobo good? Amazon reviews are not kind. MSI Performance Gaming AMD X470 ATX Motherboard (X470 Gaming Pro)
David Ramirez
>literally who youtuber
I'm not the one who made the claim that you could get a new 1080 for $330.
No since the 20 series is shit.
Just touch the metal of your case before touching electronics.
4.2 stars is not that bad? I'd just get the B450M Mortar or Tomahawk, though. If you want a higher end board, something like the Prime Pro or X470 Strix.
Unironically that's how AMD's stock looks like right now
Ryder Wood
>stock 1070ti is the same/better than a oc'ed vega Thanks for proving my point
Parker Stewart
>tom's hardware
JUST BUY IT
Jose Hernandez
It's ~15% behind on average there, you retard. There 1080 is 10% behind and it's on average ahead of the 1070Ti. Maybe learn to read an average things out before you comment and look like even more of a fool.
The more you buy the more you save.
Owen Moore
Intel builds better chips. AMD can't even build high end chips that have integrated graphics
XD
Jose Sullivan
pls advise
Adam Hernandez
>be on windows 8.1 >buy RX 580, was a good deal and hey free games >lol no drivers >proceed on 2 hour journey trying to get the win 7 drivers to work since apparently "They just work" according to amd shill friend >still jumping through hoops 2 hours later
This shit would've never happened on an nvidia card.
Why the fuck doesn't AMD support windows 8.1 jesus fucking christ.
no and i've been vacuuming my computer since i first built one in like 2000
Grayson Nelson
Can I expect 1080p@144fps performance from a 1070ti? Or is upgrading to 1440@144fps worth it and capable of the 1070 ti?
Leo Green
For the future, you'll want a 1080, for now yes that should be fine provided you use conservative settings in some games.
Matthew Ortiz
GTX 1080 for 2k@144? Is 2k even worth it? The prices are relatively similar for 1070 Ti and 1080 where I am
Chase Wright
Corsair Vengeance LPX vs G.Skill Aegis? Which ones are better?
Dylan Hughes
You said 1080p@144hz
If you're talking 1440p@144hz, you want a 1080 Ti.
the GTX 1080 for 144hz is recommended for future, it isnt much more than the 1070 ti and you gain the benefit of over clocking and gddr5x. IM just saying if yo uwant more mileage and bang for buck, get a good deal on a 1080 for 1080p@144hz for the next few years. If you dont car and will be upgrading in 1-2 years or less, get 1070 and save money now i guess.
Michael Ross
