Today's society does well to keep the masses busy, they don't have time to worry about long term issues until they're much older. People are lusting for safety and security because as they've grown up, they, for some reason, came to realize that those are the best things that they can hope to achieve. It's all about "don't let tomorrow be worse than today". Now all you need to do is call Snowden a traitor and there you go: he is now easy to hate because the populace feels threatened. And considering the public gets at least one new enemy every day, he is quickly forgotten.

Nobody really believes in long term goals past global warming, and even that's a maybe. People will tell you to work for your country, but they don't believe in that either and most take themselves way too seriously considering. Humanity has no vision, and the advances in technology seem to "fix" and push "progress" instead of the people wielding it. There are principles and culture, but they're still here simply because they were valued before, and that value is lost on those here today.

The problem is the source of the leaks shouldn't matter. Assange doesn't care where leaks are sourced from, so long as they are genuine (which forensics also confirmed as genuine). He has always maintained that the site upholds his philosophy of "radical transparency."

The WikiLeaks affair is just people upset because they assumed that the site was in favor of their political ideologies due to past leaks. Truth should be more important than where the information comes from, but it isn't to most people.

I do agree with you. I just find that the whole brainwashing angle turns everyone off from the main point I'm trying to make. There's this big ditch and people are desperately shoveling dirt into it, without really knowing why it exists or why it needs to be filled. It is madness, and I believe that to function in today's 1st world, you do have to be either stupid, at least somewhat mad, on pills/drugs or have immense discipline, willpower and great upbringing (or some combination). The shortsightedness is very damaging in my opinion, because it causes ones values to stray from "I want tomorrow to be better so that our young can have an even better life" to "I want everything to still be here tomorrow"(these are supposed to sound generalized and blunt, but you get the idea). This is why technology such as smartphones are so attractive to the masses: they bring respite from this mad, shortsighted world. As a consequence people tend to flock to online bubbles looking for hugboxes, distancing themselves from problems and opposing opinions; and this is something that surely has a negative effect on their intelligence, as well as the world around them. Even if the "sheeple" realize they are asleep, do they have a reason to wake up?

I am sure that taking the path of least resistance is a good trait, in that it will provide a species an easier way to survive. I wouldn't be so quick to mark intellect as a disadvantage, though. Not that this matters for us - we are conscious and on top of the food chain now. It doesn't bother a monkey in the long run if another steals their banana; it bothers us, though. We are dealing with problems that are both unique to us and were created by us. The normalization is a part of our society, but people take it for granted, especially today where one's humanity and nature are suppressed under layers of said normalization. Consequently people do not expect other humans to be "human" anymore and as such we are in a rush to suppress these outbreaks of "humanness" with weirder laws and whatnot. And as a consequence of that, we have some forms of extremism. Molds will continue to break until we either stop using molds or we ourselves break, with the latter being more likely with the whole dystopia fascination. The breaking and trying to fit into such molds keeps one busy, which brings us back to the first point. And like I've mentioned before: unless we as a collective want to build a better tomorrow with a better society and utilizes technology in more reasonable ways, etc., we will continue to have the masses act primal and thus uninterested in the problems at hand as they search for more pleasure.
