depends on what you're doing, if you're just notetaking for something like eng lit then even a chromebook would be enough for basic work (wouldnt reccomend tho)
you can find used dells and thinkpads for cheap which will be more powerful and be useful longer (although you might wanna get a new battery for some)

Get a super gaudy thinkpad from the mid 2000s (you'll need to buy a replacement battery), install Arch Linux (rtfm noob), do fucking NOT use proprietary software, if your professor requires it, get a different professor, for the free (free as in freedom) Windows software required you will install and configure wine to run it.
