depends on what you're doing, if you're just notetaking for something like eng lit then even a chromebook would be enough for basic work (wouldnt reccomend tho)
you can find used dells and thinkpads for cheap which will be more powerful and be useful longer (although you might wanna get a new battery for some)

Get a super gaudy thinkpad from the mid 2000s (you'll need to buy a replacement battery), install Arch Linux (rtfm noob), do fucking NOT use proprietary software, if your professor requires it, get a different professor, for the free (free as in freedom) Windows software required you will install and configure wine to run it. Get a cheap Dell or Thinkpad. They should work fine to view pdfs and use MS Office/Libre Office.

university IT helpdesk employee here, seen a lot of stupid shit so heres my advice:

avoid macs. PERIOD. So many fucking problems with software for classes and printers, jesus fucking christ printers on macs make me want to kill myself.
Not only that but most universities have these connectors called HDMI or VGA and your super sleek dildo port mac wont be able to connect to the projector, and no I'm not going to loan a student a 150 dollar dongle to project their gender studies slideshow on.

also avoid those god awful chromebooks, their shit. end of story.

Also avoid the super fucking trash 32gb craptops. Windows 10 fills them up and you cant install anything on them, shit you cant even update Windows 10 on them.

I would recommend one of the 2 in 1 laptops, it's what I use, really useful for laptop work but also for being able to read the e-textbooks since fuck paying the jewstore for the books.

also, fuck macs again. seriously, those fucking toys are the bane of my existence.

Buy a cheap Acer with an i3 and a disk drive. I've got my shitbook upgraded to 8g or ram and an M.2 SSD so its blazing fast. Dual boot manjaro/winblows10 so you can use all that Shit that they make you download.
