Actually that is how it works, the best noise canceling you can get is to block out the noise to start with, you can do that by either “canceling” it through sound processing or the way OP did it.

I use your idea with good isolating earbuds, although you can't filter low frecuencies as these can be heart trough the vibration of your skull.
Just buy 3M Work Tunes. Even my Bose headphones didn't block enough noise for me to use them while mowing, but these things work great.
No set of headphones on earth can stop you from hearing low frequencies. Good for us, female voices are high pitch.
