Do you actually have a Github or Gitlab account with actual contributions either to other repos or your own?

Do you actually have a Github or Gitlab account with actual contributions either to other repos or your own?

Is it (partially) to show your skills to potential employers?

Yes

>Do you actually have a Github or Gitlab account with actual contributions either to other repos or your own?
Yes, I do actually have a Github account with actual contributions to my own repos.
>Is it (partially) to show your skills to potential employers?
Oh god, no. That wouldn't help to get me hired.

Yes, for my job I write code for a public repo
So I guess partially also for future employers but I don't intend on leaving soon

yea. I think it helped me get one job. I use it for my own purposes though. host my personal site on Github pages, and most of my projects on Gitlab cuz of free private repos. the CI also works well enough for me.

Yes?

I have a question. Can you compile a tar or zipped release of an app from GitHub on Android? How do you do it?

I write NPM libraries that do simple things like "give country an ip address belongs to" or api wrappers for coinbase, google, etc and then I remove them a few months after the downloads start ramping up.

Yes. No.

No, you need android studio on an x86 device.

Yeah, but they’re for scraping blacked.com and stuff

>Do you actually have a Github or Gitlab account with actual contributions either to other repos or your own?
Yes. Including some very major contributions to a project that's not "mine".
>Is it (partially) to show your skills to potential employers?
It certainly what got me my current job, and the job before that, but it's not really the reason I did it. I like contributing to open source software.

>Do you actually have a Github or Gitlab account with actual contributions either to other repos or your own?
Yep.

>Is it (partially) to show your skills to potential employers?
At first yes, but after a few years actually programming in a professional environment I went and deleted all the shit I put up there out of pure embarrassment. All the code I check in now is to private repo's, but I know this will fuck me if I leave my current job now, need to make new projects.

I have 2 repos with shitty bash scripts, does that count

yes, I have one, but it was made for the purpose of avoiding my employer.

>Do you actually have a Github or Gitlab account with actual contributions either to other repos or your own?
Yes, I moved away from GitHub after Microsoft bought it. As for your own repos, it's also useful as a poor man's cloud to sync across different machines.
>Is it (partially) to show your skills to potential employers?
Sort of. Generally speaking, an impressive Git* profile is usually a plus, since it's direct proof of your skills, but I've heard that some employers are actually wary of people who are too active on them, since they are worried they "wouldn't be able to give it all on the job".
Luckily, they are usually not worth working for anyway.

>microsoft source repo
>they can steal your private code and use without any credit or payment
we nuked out projects on github now running a local github

>local github
You mean Github enterprise or Gitlab?

I have, but only for my or projects with bros repos. I don't work for free for other people.
However it's not my primary reason, employment does matter.

I use GitHub because I can store code in it. Otherwise I can loose it if my storage dies. Also tracking changes does come in handy sometimes.
Also it's a good way to share code with my students

What's your occupation?

not where i live. People here value more if you worked before with a certain language and how long (if its > 2 years you will get the job)

not using CVS the supprior ancestor and Linus's prefered source control

Masters student and part timer university teacher

Literally the only thing on my GitHub is a text file that says nigger a lot and me debugging porn games

bump

on an x86 phone you should be able to run the commandline compiling tools

yes
yes, but I also believe in freedums and it has the plus I don't have to pay to host it myself

protip if you're trying to get a job with your github portfolio make sure all your uploaded projects have plenty of screenshots and html5 / js enabled demos if possible. No interviewer is going to spend time downloading and compiling a project if they have 300 more applicants to look at.

damn, good idea

Yes
No. I just work on my projects from different computers and it makes updating files easy.

Can anyone link to some nice GitHub portfolios?
I consider making a website for my github projects instead of just linking my profile. Some employers might be lazy fucks....

im a student currently and use github so ive got something practical to show to employers in the future. mainly bc its just a convenient and reliable way of storing projects
