The media play/pause keys on my laptop will make VLC play/pause even when not in focus. But on my desktop, they only work when VLC is in focus. Any ideas? (On Windows 10)
Your laptop has software or a driver that forces the key mapping.

What laptop should I get for working from home (freelance dev) to replace my poor T420s that I love so dearly but the 2 cores are giving in to the workload. I've decided to go the I7 8th gen route, with dedicated GPU so I can game on the side, and so far the options are: Dell XPS 15 9570 - I don't like the keyboard + throttles hard Rog Zephyrus - I'm worried the opening bottom panel will prevent me from using it in my lap Razer Blade 15 - around $3k at my country, poor keyboard + shaky build quality
Thinkpad X1 Extreme - I like having the TrackPoint, but it costs $3k and has GTX 1050Ti only

I'm using my laptop mostly while laying on the couch, so I'd prefer something 15.6" or 17, but compact so I can put it on my knees. Also something a little more professional would be nice. Other omitted options are: Lenovo Y730 - the thermal vent design seems weird, but the keyboard is really nice (even better than X1 Extreme's). I'm worried about build quality and like Zephyrus M501 - about being able to work from my lap
MSI GS65 - A friend of mine took it - and regrets it quite much. Build is awful and had to take it for warranty repairs 2 times for first 2 months Thinkpad T580 - solid choice (even thougn underpowered CPU), but costs $2.5k at my country without GPU, which is ridiculous

I seem to remember that if I am recording a game that is getting a solid, locked 144 frames, that I would need to record it using a fps value that is a multiple of 12. No clue if my brain made that up or if it's true though. I feel like it had something to do with choppiness or later problems with encoding.
I've been recording at 24 NTSC and like it, but was thinking of increasing that value. Since 30fps is a common preset but 36 is not (but 48 is?), I think I am either mistaken about the multiple rule or 36 frames would cuck standard 30/60hz displays. I really don't know. Any advice?

My motherboard doesn't have an M.2 slot, nor does it support booting from my M.2 SSD connected through a PCI-E adapter.
Is there any way of installing Windows to the significantly faster M.2 SSD?
I've tried: -Having the System Reserved partition on a different disk. Didn't work. -Trying to nonetheless install Windows to the M.2. Installer wouldn't let me. -First installing Windows to another disk, then cloning it bit-for-bit to the M.2, after which I installed GRUB, which found the cloned Windows. Didn't work.
With Linux, there's no problem - I can have the OS on the M.2 and /boot on another disk, and it works wonderfully. But Windows just won't play ball.
If anyone could post me a relevant link, Google keywords, guides, or anything I'd be extremely grateful!

I was thinking I will create a startpage for my browser and I want to add a "login" functionality where my credentials are hardcoded somewhere
so, it should work something like >*click* on google link >login to google >redirect to google homepage
I don't like the idea of storing passwords on the browser and password managers are retarded
Any help on how to achieve this? Especially for twitter, linkedin, protonmail and edx?

>I don't want to store my creds in my browser because it's insecure >instead I want to host all of them on the internet in plain text uhh I mean, sure, you can do it. Just format all of the links like username:[email protected]/login If someone cracks your shitty self-hosted login, you're toast. If you don't do it over HTTPS, you're toast. Doing anything like that, you want 2fa enabled on everything. Even then it's dumb. Even if you don't host it on the internet, you have to store the passwords in plain text somewhere. Not better. And you can't login that way with protonmail.
In what way is your idea better than a password manager? Autism.
Remember to store your passwords in plaintext for faster load times :^)

Should I build an mid-to-high end range desktop PC if I want to work with CAD/Revit/SolidWorks, and sometimes play abandonware games with Forza? Personally I find working on a laptop to be painful, and doing things like rendering borders the impossible unless you want to pay +2000$. You can get a desktop that handles CAD/3D fairly comfortably for less than 1000.
Unless you need mobility, I see no good reason to pay for a laptop.

in Java (or any ool desu) I have an object and this object initializes in it other objects this parent-object has a constant(final) property I have to pass this property to the child object constructor and the child object will use this as a property aswell
now question: common sense tells me that the child-object property should also be final should it?

I've got a dual boot setup and had my computer running windows 7 and rebooted into arch linux, after opening virtualbox (I always get corrupted graphics on virtualbox with i3wm until I close the popup about disk images not being accessable idk why) but among the corrupted graphics on the left is a skewed image of my desktop from my windows 7 os I just rebooted from, I recognize it because of the fact I was just playing max payne on steam and by the files on my desktop.
I copy music to my phone running lineage os from my pc but on my phones file manager and music player only some of the copied albums are showing up. What's causing this and how do I fix it?
That is a really interesting observation. My guess would be that there is still left over data in the video memory that gets dumped when the video card cant properly output the video it gets sent when you boot into the new OS. Is this issue easily reproducible? Video memory is volatile, so it should get purged when you boot into the OS? Are you using EFI/UEFI, and can you reproduce the issue when you do a full shutdown, or only a soft reboot?

I'm making a totally-not-homework python program about Knuth's theorem that you can reach any number with a combination of square roots, factorials and floors starting from 4.

this will disable the hibernation file. You can disable page files by right clicking " computer" and going to properties -> advanced -> virtual memory.

Just tried it again and it seems reproducible when I do a soft reboot, althought it seems a lot more corrupted than before, if I do a complete shutdown then the image is like in the pic and bears no resemblance to my desktop, so I take it that it's just leftover data that's getting stored in the ram or gpu or something. And I'm using UEFI.
Also check your C:\Windows\Temp. You can safely manually delete everything in there, sometimes a ton of logs and windows update files get stored in there.
Xavier Hernandez
Last thread somebody said that DVI is superior to hdmi? How is this?
Logan Rivera
A soft reboot does not purge volatile memory when you are using EFI, so my bet is that is what is happening. Potentially a really boring defcon talk in the future, but not an actual issue you need to worry about.
Caleb Scott
