what data are they sending back?

Mostly metadata, with which ip adresses you connect and stuff like that, but they can take your machibe over and turn on your mic and cam or just copy your filey to them.

how do they find out which device to access. like if nsa wanted all my files but didn't know what laptop I was using how would it work? (see what IP's had accessed online accounts associated w/ me and then...?)

I don't think you understand how this works.
They see your computer activity and you're identified if you plan like next 9/11 or something (they won't disclose these backdoors to catch a pedo or other low profile scum).
At first, obviously, they don't know who uses computer.
It's not like you're in some NSA's search engine or something. :^)

use a chinese phone, i use xiaomi and the prc love me. plus it's like a big "fuck you" to the NSA. They act like it's only okay when they spy but god forbid the chinese do it.

This is why I'm designing my own processor and building it from TTL chips.
Right now it's comparable to an i286, but at least I know it's backdoor free.

Make a screenfetch and post it using your own processor
Real and most viable answer is power9 CPUs
