Trackers usually responds with a peer list slightly faster than the DHT does. Tracker 'scrape' makes it possible for the client to auto manage what torrents to seed.
Redundancy; trackers, the DHT and PeerEXchange makes a very stable 'tripod'.

However, use only one tracker and maybe one or two as backup. More is excessive and wasteful.

Magnet links don't work if the private flag is set.

How a normal magnet download works: Click on magnet link. Torrent client associated with 'magnet:' links gets it, uses DHT and trackers in the magnet link to get a peer list. Connect to peers and download torrent metadata from them using 'Extension for Peers to Send Metadata Files - BEP9'...

A properly implemented torrent client deactivates BEP9 if the private flag is set.

How a 'private tracker' magnet download 'works': Click on magnet link. Torrent client associated with 'magnet:' links gets it, uses DHT and trackers in the magnet link to get a peer list. Connect to peers and almost always FAILS to download torrent metadata from them using 'Extension for Peers to Send Metadata Files - BEP9'. But here is the trick, in the magnet they use a parameter 'as' (...as=example.com/torrentname.torrent...) that the client uses to download the .torrent file from. IE not much difference from a browser downloading it.

The problems with this:

'as' is obscure extension that not all clients implement. wiki.theory.org/index.php/BitTorrent_Magnet-URI_Webseeding#Retrieving_metadata_-_.22as.3D.22_parameter

Bad implementations and some modified clients does NOT deactivate BEP9 if the private flag is set.

Announcing to the DHT leaks the infohash and the peers IP:PORT. This will occasionally be picked up by DHT indexers and because of the above, they sometimes succeed to download the metadata and the torrent is available publicly.

Even if the metadata is not leaked, it's still possible to download the torrent if you know the infohash and IP:PORT of a peer by blindly requesting pieces from it.

If you're only using your client for private torrents, you can disable DHT globally and not worry about it

You need extensive testing done by very competent people, so no, you can't trust whitelisted clients.

Not enough, other peers may share your IP:PORT with PEX before they get the metadata and see that it's a private torrent

Whitelisted clients do NOT announce private torrents (magnet or not) to the DHT.

BTN simple bundles their tracker announce URL in with the magnet link. This is how the client finds the peers.

Thats not right. Look at BTN's magnet links. They contain the infohash of the torrent, the url of the .torrent file, and absolutely no indication whatsoever that the torrent is private (because magnet links don't have a field for that)

Most clients that are given that link will start treating them as a normal public magnet link because it has the infohash available, and only later will it download the .torrent file and have access to the information marking the torrent as private.

Quick rundown on Oppaitime:
The numbers of members aren't even the big joke of their site, the catalog itself is has barely anything. It's a community first and a tracker second, so the only energy anyone spends there is circlejerking instead of uploading. I've been on their tracker a year and there's a big disconnect between the majority who never use the site, and the small group of pathetic faggots who actually bought into the 'cool guy tracker' routine. No one in their clique even uploads or downloads anything ever, so neither class of person there does anything to contribute.
The only people who upload are the few newfags who've been there less a month, and sometimes the occasional clique wannabe who will never be in the inner circle, neither of whom upload anything interesting that you can't get off of sukebei. They want new people so they can boost their catalog, but they don't at the same time because they're too lonely to end their internet friend club and anyone who calls out their autism is quickly removed. It's better to run a tracker with no more than 20 people on at any given time.
In short it's basically nyaa/sukebei but with 1% of their (max), and not even the distinguished selection of of sukebei, more like random spurts of cross-uploads when someone gets the strange idea of adding a torrent.
